Great docudrama. Very accurate portrayal of both sides of the Air war over Great Britain. Excellent cinematography. Very entertaining to anyone who has an interest in WWII. Classic acting by Michael Caine and others. The extensive inclusion of the German side of the battle was very well done and was good to show that there is always two sides to any conflict. The characters were well devolped and even those in small roles did an outstanding job.
I remember seeing this film when I was in grade school back when it was released in 1969. I enjoyed the film then, and as I have learned more about the actual battle and those involved over the years, I can confirm that the film is a reasonably accurate portrayal of what was went on. I have also had the good fortune to meet a few people over the years who actually lived through the battle, both civilians as well as military who have both complemented the film on it's accuracy in depicting what they went through. One person who stands out who sadly is no longer with us, was an Austrian gentleman we all galled "Mr Gerhard". He was an Austrian student studying at MIT when the Germans annexed Austria. Rather than go home and serve Hitler, Mr Gerhard went to Canada and joined the RAF. He was a participant in the battle, but he had only a single kill (Bf 109). When we asked him about the film, his reply was "Well the planes were not quite right, but the airfield scenes were so real, I could smell them".Read full review
This is probrably the greatest and most important addition to anyone aviation enthusiast who empasizes The Second World War. A Tremendous cast that gives you an awe inspiring theatrical account of what was going on in Europe over a year before the United States was brought into the war. If you love Spitfires and Hurricanes and an orgasm of Merlin Engines(since both British and German aircraft used in the filming of this movie are brought to life with Merlin power)then this is the movie for you. Only knock on it is that the Spitfires are everywhere in this movie and in real life it was the mighty Hawker Hurricane that the British had in great supply and also it was the Hurricane resposible for shooting down 3/5ths of all german aircraft brought down. Still I watch it all the time and have since I was 8 years old.Read full review
Not too many WWII movie with real German speaking actors and this is one of them. Authentic aircrafts and realistic model planes even to today’s standard. Some special effect scenes were rough but understandable. Overall a great movie!
