Product Information

"Eugene Sledge became more than a legend with his memoir, With The Old Breed . He became a chronicler, a historian, a storyteller who turns the extremes of the war in the Pacific--the terror, the camaraderie, the banal and the extraordinary--into terms we mortals can grasp."--Tom Hanks NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In The Wall Street Journal , Victor Davis Hanson named With the Old Breed one of the top five books on epic twentieth-century battles. Studs Terkel interviewed the author for his definitive oral history, The Good War . Now E. B. Sledge's acclaimed first-person account of fighting at Peleliu and Okinawa returns to thrill, edify, and inspire a new generation. An Alabama boy steeped in American history and enamored of such heroes as George Washington and Daniel Boone, Eugene B. Sledge became part of the war's famous 1st Marine Division--3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. Even after intense training, he was shocked to be thrown into the battle of Peleliu, where "the world was a nightmare of flashes, explosions, and snapping bullets." By the time Sledge hit the hell of Okinawa, he was a combat vet, still filled with fear but no longer with panic. Based on notes Sledge secretly kept in a copy of the New Testament, With the Old Breed captures with utter simplicity and searing honesty the experience of a soldier in the fierce Pacific Theater. Here is what saved, threatened, and changed his life. Here, too, is the story of how he learned to hate and kill--and came to love--his fellow man. "In all the literature on the Second World War, there is not a more honest, realistic or moving memoir than Eugene Sledge's. This is the real deal, the real war: unvarnished, brutal, without a shred of sentimentality or false patriotism, a profound primer on what it actually was like to be in that war. It is a classic that will outlive all the armchair generals' safe accounts of--not the 'good war'--but the worst war ever."--Ken Burns

  • M U S T read

This is the first book i read in 10 year. I’m not kidding. I wanted to read after i recently watched The Pacific. And oh boy, did I not regret picking up this book. I had to know what would happen on the next page, and the next. I read in the airport, in the plane and on the beach. This is as close as you can be in the thick of the brutal WWII Pacific battles. This book is as honest as can be. Get it as soon as you can. You will not regret it.

  • A must read to understand the Old Breed that went to battle in the Pacific in WW 11.

The product is 5 star because of the very good shape the used book is in. The author done an excellent job of describing the Hell of the intense fighting and the sacrifices these men made.

  • most intense true story of the fight in the south pacific in WW11

  • A real story

As a Marine veteran of Vietnam, and the son of a WW2 Marine veteran I can identify closely with E.B. Sledge's experiences. His writings, even though somewhat painful, put me into the battle. It's comforting to see that others had those same fears and doubts and survived to have a full life.

  • With the Old Breed

I really enjoyed this book. Was very honest view of the battles that took place in some of the worst conditions known to man. How Sledge Hammer was able to put these thoughts into such inspiring words is a testament to “the old breed”. Those men and women were wired to succeed and nothing less. Thank you all that served during WWII in Europe and The Pacific theatre. God bless you all. SEMPER FI SLEDGE HAMMER. Rest In Peace.

  • Vital to Understanding what War is All About at Ground Level

A classic. No hype, just a straight-forward relation of what it was like to be a US Marine assaulting Japanese island strongholds. Not a sales-pitch for the Marine Corps, but you can't read it without coming to a high level of respect for their training and professional commitment. It's about what war is really like, and you should read this whether you understand the importance of military strength, or believe the military is a malicious part of government.

  • Great story of little-known campaign.

This was a great story, well told. While a personal memoir of a combat marine in the Pacific in WWII, this is also told with enough background to establish the relevancy of actions. This is a very compelling book, and it deserves its great reputation.

  • Powerful Account Of Real Combat

My uncle served with the 1st Marine Division in some of the same battles covered in the book. Reading accounts like this helped me understand why he would never talk about it. A grunt's view of the brutality of war and these battles were brutal. Gruesome and disturbing but also shows the camaraderie and what few other positive things can be taken away from such an experience. Many Americans nowadays don't comprehend the suffering involved in such a conflict. This will open their eyes--and perhaps turn their stomach.. Despite how grim it is I would recommend it.

  • Real Life War Experiences

Great experience from combat veterans that reflect the real nature and results of war. Chronicled in an order where you can understand from the beginning to the end. Good and sad stories that again reflect the true nature of war. Makes me feel that these men endured a great many extreme situations and handled them based on their training and experience.

  • A must read!

I'm an avid reader of war history and the lives of the people involved. By far this book has made it to the top of the list. Highly recommended for anyone who'd like to know from an excellently written personal account. You can't help but "feel it".
