The only reason I gave it the score I did was because Sally Field was perfect in this film..the Children however were total a**h***s..this film is soo far from the truth it isn't even funny..my Father also died from cancer & we never once pissed & moaned about how long it was taking..nor did we keep asking the Doctor "how long is this going to take"..I'm not sure who was worse the oldest Son, first he shows up cracking stupid jokes, what was really stupid was the scene where he actually got him and his Brother thrown out of grocery store because his cheap a** didn't want to pay full price on a small container of orange juice..the second oldest Son comes into the picture & he's just as bad..all he cares about is "getting back" throughout the film he keeps asking "how long is this going to take" he even came close 2 "going back" when his poor Mother didn't die fast enough! the next in line a Daughter started out pretty decent, but even she was a total jerk by the movies end..she constantly had her Mothers meds increased & even had a cathater put in her so she wouldn't have 2 help her Mother 2 the bathroom..she claimed this was for the reason it was too hard for her Mother 2 get up & down..and I would have bought that if it had not been for the fact she pissed & moaned about how she does all of the work..finally we have the youngest also a Boy..he's married to a cold heartless so and so who wouldn't even lift a finger & help them care for their dying Mother because she didn't have her "coffee yet"..she even left her Husbands side returned home leaving him 2 deal with his Mothers passing alone..I think the final straw came when they forged their Mothers signature (her second husband helped them of course) & closed her bank account they then divided up her money (I should add in one scene they're playing poker using her meds as the winnings)went through their Mothers belongings & donated what they didn't want..come on people, THE WOMAN WAS STILL ALIVE! The oldest Son haggled with a cheap online service to have his Mother cremated he actually talked them down on the price (who does that?)then the Daughter gets the idea to have a Rabbi come in and speak with their Mother on her death bed..and of course I'm thinking finally something that is true to life... wrong! The Guy was a moron he shouted in her face & told her she "looked good" & she "should get well soon", while the two oldest Sons and the Daughter stood nearby laughing like idiots..he reminded me of a teleavangelist, if I had been that Womans Daughter I would have tossed him out on his ass! After finding out they could legally over medicate their Mother (not sure how that works) they kept turning up the juice guess she was taking too long to die..I'm sorry, but when my Father lay dying we did not crack stupid jokes at his expense, nor did we haggle about his funeral cost, Nor did we medicate him to death..I do realize there is such a thing as a mercy killing, but that was not the case here they were waay too busy bitching about how long it (her death) was taking!! Her actual death did seem 2 strike a chord, but not 4 long..the youngest Son was out the door & on his way home as soon as he could..I nearly jerked him off the film when I saw he was carrying a toaster! I am sorry, but anyone who would act that way while their Parent is dying does not deserve 2 have Parents 2 begin with! They cried as they scattered her ashes, but for me that was alot too late! True to life??? u need help!Read full review
Excellent movie- a few years ago I came very close to dying, so this film grabbed my attention. Prior to that I had taken care of numerous hospice patients. This runs very close to reality.

I thought that the levity in which the four children exhibited in such a sad time helped one see how people can cope with it. What I didn't like was the fact that my mother had suffered in the same way and I wished I had been surrounded by siblings like them. There were some humorous moments like in the scene where they were all sitting at the table eating Chinese food. The ill mother,(Sally Field) could not swallow food anymore. All she could do was to put some food in her mouth and then spit it out. The children all did the same thing so as to make it a funny thing and they all burst out laughing. Although it was not funny for me to watch my mother not able to keep food down, I did find it amusing. I related to a lot of the circumstances surrounding the impending death of one's mother.
great actor loved it

This has to be one of my favorite all time movies. Four siblings gather at the family homestead to spend time with their mother before she passes away. Sally Field is a fabulous as the mom with unconditional love for her children. This movie will touch every inch of your heart as you experience the full family dynamics surrounding this event in their lives. The raw emotions of losing their mother is topped off with sibling rivalry, humor and pure love. I could watch this movie daily and each time still find something new and refreshing. Great movie, super acting. Expect to feel sadness and joy, frustration and fun as you delve deeper and deeper into the circle of this family and their obvious love for each other. You will laugh. You will cry and you will realize love and family are all that matter. Enjoy!Read full review
