Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven made his name in Hollywood with films such as ROBOCOP, BASIC INSTINCT, and STARSHIP TROOPERS. But Verhoeven got his start in the industry by making films (the acclaimed SPETTERS and SOLDIER OF ORANGE among them) in his native country, and it's to Holland that he returns for BLACK BOOK--his first Dutch film in 20 years. The story is set during the final days of World War II in Holland, and follows a Jewish singer named Rachel Stein (Carice Van Houten). Rachel attempts to avoid the Nazis and remains in quiet hiding until her family is brutally slain, causing her to join up with a resistance movement. On a subsequent undercover mission, Rachel crosses paths with a smitten German general named Ludwig Muntze (Sebastian Koch), with whom Rachel begins a relationship in order to feed vital information back to her colleagues in the resistance. But as the action and bloodshed escalate, Rachel realizes that she has genuine feelings for Muntze, and soon she is in enormous danger. Verhoeven's film is wildly ambitious and takes many intriguing twists and turns during its 145 minutes. BLACK BOOK commanded the largest budget of any film to be produced in Holland, and it shows. Explosions litter the screen, plenty of car chases ensue, and wince-inducing injuries and deaths propel the action. The director isn't afraid to criticize his fellow countrymen and inserts a fascinating subtext about the actions of the resistance fighters, asking some uncomfortable questions about the similarities between their behavior and that of the Nazis. Van Houten lights up the screen throughout and is surely destined for bigger things, and while the tumultuous experiences her character undergoes might push the boundaries of reality at times, Verhoeven has pointed out in interviews that Rachel is a composite character who encompasses the merged experiences of many real people from the era.

Black Book (2007)
This is one of the finest motion pictures I've seen in a long, long time. It starts slowly (first 15 minutes or so), but then picks up speed in a hurry --- with unexpected plot twists, fine acting, excellent directing. Much of it set in the Netherlands (dialogue in Dutch with snatches of German, but very good English subtitles) during the closing months of WWII before the German surrender . . . the machinations of the Dutch Resistance, trying to help Jews escape the Nazis. A real "pot boiler" and entertaining to watch. Careful, there's topless nudity (and she's built!), but very tastefully done. Believe it or not, it helps the plot and lends realism to the film. Perfect for adults and rational high teens (if there are some left). I seldom buy a film, but this one is a keeper.

A superb must see film.
Paul Verhoeven takes you to WWII era Holland & chronicles the story of a young Jewish woman in nazi occupied Holland. After the loss of her family whom were murdered by the nazis, she's taken in by the dutch resistance. She musters the courage to avenge her parents death by working with the resistance and becomes a spy to infiltrate the nazi headquarters, but while spying she falls in love with a nazi officer. This is a fantastic film with alot of action, drama & intense emotional feeling. This film is also very artistic, realistic & the imagery, scenery, etc are amazing. I'd rank this film as one of the best films I've ever seen. The film is in dutch, with some german, but does have english subtitles.

Who are the traitors?
This movie hits on all cylinders! The plot is well- developed and full of suspense. The characters such as the woman spy, the Nazi SS, and the underground Resistance provide multiple story lines. I was greatly surprised at this movie quality. It also provides a surprise ending . The action scenes are very realistic! I would highly recommend this gem which apparently did not get the great credit and renown it deserves.Also , the music is an added plus. I don’t think it lacks anything. The main puzzle is who are or is the traitor. Enjoy!

A Captivating Movie Based On The Reality of WWII
This movie captivates from start to finish with talented casting and performances. Although many of the scenes may appear harsh to some, harsher is the fact that similar scenerios, and even worse, occurred regularly to the Jewish population during this time. One scene in particular has gained critical popularity because of its sexual nature even though it is paramount to defining the plot. If you like intrigue and suspense this is a film for you. It has been produced wonderfully portraying the mannerisms, clothing and effects of the '40s and at times subtitled. This does not take away from the performances, rather enhancing them. I found the film exceptional and one when watched repeatedly does not lose its excitement and appeal.

Living With The Enemy
In the Five Star system, it says that a grade of 4 stars makes a movie better than I expected. I disagree. This move was exactly what I expected - well above average. If I had thought it would be no better than average, I would not have ordered it - and I am pleased that I did. The story line was outstanding and the acting believable. I don't want to give away too much, except to say that I was very pleased, that it was very believable and that others who like a good, well acted, attention grabbing story will like the Black Book.
