Laptop Docking Stations
While laptops offer mobility, desktop computers often provide multiple ports that give users the ability to customize their setups by plugging in add-ons and accessories. Laptop docking stations serve as a way to bridge that divide. They allow users to maintain the portability of their laptop while gaining access to the wide variety of ports that a desktop can provide.
What are the advantages of a docking station?
One advantage of a dock is that it allows laptop users to have both portability and connectivity. Docking stations also help users increase their number of USB ports without cluttering up their desks with more cables. Additionally, docking stations provide convenience. While a non-dock user might have to disconnect several cords individually before moving their notebook, someone who uses a dock typically only has to unplug one USB connection to be on their way, no matter how many devices are plugged in.
Docking stations also let you charge your devices anywhere. You don’t need to have access to an electrical outlet to charge your tablet or smartphone. Plug it into a USB port on your docking station, and you're all set.
What sort of ports are available?
Docking stations allow users to connect their laptops to a larger array of accessories than is otherwise possible. This can be beneficial if you prefer to have your tablet plugged in when it’s not in active use. It’s also appreciated by those who prefer to make use of a digital writing tablet for graphic design. By expanding the number of USB ports through the use of a dock, more peripherals can be added. Many laptop docking stations support USB-3 and USB-C.
Docks also permit laptop owners to make use of better sound capabilities. Audio connections tend to be universal, but the use of a dock can allow just about any audio device to draw on connection options other than a 3.5 mm port, such as a USB connection.
What about using other displays?
Docks allow users to expand their displays by connecting multiple monitors. This can be done by using external screens as the sole display of the computer when it’s docked or by using the other monitors as a continuation of the laptop's background. Either way, the addition of extra ports means that it is a simple matter of plugging the additional screens into the docking station.
Do the stations include power adapters?
As a general rule, docking stations include power adapters. Typically, they’ll come with a universal power adapter, but you should always confirm that if you’re unsure.
