I bought this for a particular lost recipe(faux figs from cherry tomatoes)but was delightfully surprised to see many more forgotten pantry recipes....mustard's, vinegars, preserves, sweet meats, many, many more. Dried fruits, pickling, brandied and candied items...items found in a pantry 100 years ago (and are still delicious today!). We grow our own food, putting up close to a years supply and this fills out all the edges....desserts, syrups, seasonings. If you are someone who hates supermarket shopping and loves cooking from scratch and making your own rather than buying a box or can....then this book is for you. It is NOT a basic beginning canning book....although some canning is included. How about Pear Honey? Or Blueberry Cordial? 250 great recipes....unique and great for gift giving too!Read full review
This is THE MOST delightful cookbook with recipes that truly work and are AMAZING. The Purple Basil and Orange Jelly is spectacular; I gave this book to the 'jelly lady' at our local herb fairs, and now it is her best-selling jelly. If you use sweet Vidalia onions in the 'pickled onions' recipe, those you give these to will LOVE you. You will never have to buy a Holiday gift again; these are better! Look out, Williams Sonoma! This book is a wonderful gift, and unfortunately, out-of-print. Thank goodness for Half.com.
Covers just about everything you should have on hand, and then some. I had never heard of butternuts, and discovered they are a specific variety of white walnut. Will be trying to find some.
