About this product

Product Information

Jack Benny stars in this black-and-white comedy caper from 1941. In CHARLEY'S AUNT, Charley Wyckham (Richard Haydn) and Jack Chesney (James Ellison) are two students who manage to persuade their colleague Fancourt Babberly (Benny) to dress in drag and assume the guise of Charley's Brazilian aunt, Donna Lucia. The boys hope that Aunt Donna Lucia will act as a chaperone for two women they have their eyes on, but events take a SOME LIKE IT HOT kind of turn as Charley's "aunt" becomes an object of desire.

  • Jack Benny, the Man's Man

The movie was a lot of fun. Jack doesn't really give into the swishy aspect as much as you would think from his later affectations. He is surprisingly "manly". He actually gets to kiss the ladies. On the lips ! Laird Cregar also plays it straight. No hint of his later sinister characterizations. Kay Francis gives the whole shenanigans a level of respectability. Anne Baxter is a delightful ingenue. There is a great Special Feature, a promotional short, "Three Of A Kind" with Jack Benny, TYRONE POWER and RANDOLPH SCOTT. The lack of a full five star rating is for having a commentary. If they didn't have it at all, I probably would have given it five stars. But the fact it is there and it is the single worst commentary I have ever witnessed deserves recognition. I'm not even going to name the nincompoop. He spends almost all his time just regurgatating biological check points. I felt like I was listening to someone reading Wikipedia. He tells a couple interesting anecdotes and then giggles like a little kid. I couldn't even finish listening to him once I realized... He wasn't going to talking about the scenes in the movie.

  • Jack Benny as an aunt from Brazil

Jack Benny is always entertaining whether in "The horn blows at midnight" Or to be or not to be but I doubt that has ever been as much of the physical comeduian as he is in this picture, released in 1941. Somehow this film is so entertaining that you forget that it's 75 years old. And it's a class a picture from 20th Century Fox . I would recommend the film to anyone and especially fans of Jack Benny. It's also interesting to see I very young Anne Baxter Almost a decade before "all about Eve".
