Since I have lived in the area, I have always been interested in the history of the Swift River Valley. Elizabeth Peirce's book offers an excellent look at the lost towns before and during the construction of the Quabbin Reservoir. Her rare pictures and stories of daily life in the valley towns in the years before the reservoir give a sense of melancholy. I have several books on the subject and there are many photos here I have never before seen. From the first rumors of using the Quabbin Valley as a site for a reservoir, to the actual burning and razing of the forests and towns, one gets a better understanding of the great sacrifice that was made. The inhabitants of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott gave up their homes and livelihoods in the name of progress. I highly recommend this reading for anyone interested in this lost, but not forgotten piece of Massachusetts history.Read full review
