About this product

Product Information

Quentin Crisps's autobiography THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT was adapted for the screen by the BBC in 1975, and caused a storm of controversy on its initial release. The film follows Crisps's problematic existence in England during the days before homosexuality was legalized, and includes many of the homophobic slurs and random acts of violence that the flamboyant star had to endure. Crisp never took the easy way out and remained outspoken about his sexuality, which turned him into a figurehead for the gay rights movement. THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT stars John Hurt as Quentin Crisp, and is a deeply moving and thought-provoking piece that continues to be lauded as one of British television's finest moments.

  • John Hurt Flaming to Glory

Great movie about a real person who defied all conventions long before it was fashionable to do so. John Hurt's performance was funny as well as sensitive. The film is outrageous without being crude or crass. Only an extreme Homo-phobe, emphasis on the word "extreme", would not enjoy this film.
