This is one of the better editions of the complete works: there is a later revised edition, but there is bound to be another in a year or two. The problem is that there is no single, original manuscript by Shakespeare: all we have to work with are the quartos and folios which depend on prompt copies, people's ( i.e. actors, producers etc ) memories and the accuracy and vagaries of the printers. Editors try to produce a version which is as nearly authentic as they can make it but of course there will be differences, sometimes large, between the various editions. If you want to have some sort of example of the complexities of editing from so many sources and the work that has been done by generations of scholars I would suggest the two volumes of the Arden edition of "Hamlet", (Third series) by Ann Thompson and Neil Taylor. This edition of the Complete Works will take up relatively little shelf space, but it's heavy (over 2kgs) and the font size is small: not comfortable bedtime reading. It will, however, serve well as a reference work and the price is very reasonable.Read full review
Small font. Difficult to read. $4.00 Shipping via Media Mail was excessive.
