This is an almost great film showing Jim Cagney doing what he loved to do best--dancing. And he was an excellent tap dancer--make no mistake. But he was an even better actor--especially playing gangsters, where he made his real money. The other gems in this movie are the young Gordon McRae, displaying that great baritone voice which would lead to him to star in Oklahoma and Carousel movie versions a few years later. And the wonderful Doris Day, great singer and actress, whom Cagney once compared to the great Laurette Taylor in natural acting ability. And I should also mention the talented dancer Gene Nelson, who also appeared with McRae in Oklahoma (remember that Kansas City number?) The one weakness in this movie is connected to the absurd plot twist where the 51 yo Cagney suddenly becomes a cadet for a week! Comedies can be comedies, but that simply doesn't happen at West Point. It's an example of some brash writing which damages the movie. Too bad. Because everything else about this musical comedy is hunky dory.Read full review
This ia picture from a bygone era. The 'gushy' musical from the middle of the last century. It's great for a rainy day, or to show the younger crowd what an afternoon at the movies used to be like. This DVD has a trailer (for Tea for Two), a newsreel (Truman giving a speech - the first part of which could be a criticism of our current day politicians), a Daffy Duck cartoon, and then the feature presentation. Really a nice packaging of a trip to the movies when I was a kid. All song and dance numbers, some slapstick, a corny story, and you get to hear Jimmy Cagney speak his decent French. Really! You can't beat the price for this time capsule.
Good movie. Not great, but I enjoyed it. Its fun to watch cause it was filmed in the 1950's, and that's my favorite year for movies. Black and White. Fun watching Doris Day as an aspiring actress. She must be about 25 or so in this...not much older. Nice love story behind the main theme of the movie. Some old shots/scenes of famous places and buildings in New York City, taken in the 1950's. ( Backdrops for the movie).

Fabulous dancers of the Fifties: Virginia Mayo and Gene Nelson. Popular Musical Stars of the Fifties: Doris Day and Gordon MacRae. And if you find it a novelty to see James Cagney dance, this is a MUST to see! There is the usual hokum of the musical of that era but put that aside and enjoy Cagney singing (I'm not sure if he'd have even called it that!) and dancing and being the cocky little guy his career was based on. Cagney fans will remember him with Virgina Mayo in White Heat. The final dance number with Cagney dancing with Virginia Mayo is worth watching the whole movie for. I rated it Excellent due to my appreciation of all the talent used in this one movie.
Cagney is always good. Would have liked more memorable songs.
