I am re-reading the entire series from Book 1 (The Gunslinger) which I first read in the 80 and 90s when they were first published. In my opinion this Volume was the best of the three preceeding it...with Roland reliving a great love story in a night-long palaver with Jake, Susannah, and Eddie. This story line proved to me that Stephen King can write a romance as good as any of the "romance" authors. It is at once powerful, wonderful and heart breaking. His love for Susan has been mentioned before but in this book we get to meet her and to understand better what motivates Roland. I am now re-listening to Wolves of the Calla on CD which I am finding I understand much better so far this time around. Wolves picks up where Wizard and Glass leaves off. I think being able to go from one volume to the other seamlessly without having to wait is a wonderful way to relive and re-discover King's life's work series. The first published volumes were sometimes many months apart so many times the flow of the story was lost. I urge King fans to go back through this series again; you'll be surprised how much it will hold your interest even if you've read the last book.Read full review
A person doesn't start out reading a book, thinking I will not be done with this story for about.......10 years. But sequels and prequels can be so consuming, but in a good way. Although, I am a Stephen King fan, I did not "get into" The Gunslinger series until my husband started reading them. Needless to say, I have had to go back and find books I had not read. I have enjoyed this on going story, as if I were a young kid and my parents were reading me a chapter a night and could not wait until we read again tonight.
Obviously, you need to read the first three. This isn't a series that you can pick up a book and step into the middle of the story. This is, in my opinion, the best series of books ever written. I love the story, and I love that King incorporates not only his own work into the story, but the work of others as well. From the very first word in The Gunslinger, I was hooked on this series and read them all. Then, I went out and bought the series so I could read it again.

I have read Dark Tower I thru III and am now reading this Dark Tower IV which I have been anxious to do as III left me with a cliff-hanger. This series of books keep the reader so involved that you don't want to put the book down. I just purchased V as don't want to have to wait when I finish IV. Someone should really make a series of movies of the Dark Tower collection. Great story line and the special effects would be awesome!!!!! Big Stephen King fan here
