My AT&T 2Wire DSL Modem decided to quit working right before I left town for an extended trip. AT&T "graciously" offered to sell me a new one for $120 plus S&H. I refused to have AT&T take advantage of me again so a little research showed that most any ADSL modem can be used to receive your DSL service from AT&T. I opted for the ActionTec GT704WGV wireless router to replace my defunct 2Wire unit. This unit was offered as a stand alone retail unit and as a service unit for Verizon DSL service. The one I purchased was one of the latter. The unit is an attractive silver color and lightweight with plenty of mounting options. It is a wireless router but has four RJ-45 ports in the back to allow the use of a hardwire option. The unit works as well or better than my old 2Wire in most every way except one and that is setup. You will have to do a little research to find out how to get into your unit but most all the information is online. Forget getting any assistance from AT&T as they will only offer help if you blow $150 for their unit. I was able to contact Actiontec with my questions via e-mail and received a response within 12hrs....very impressive considering I did not purchase the unit directly from them. Verizon has a re-direct to their DSL website built into the unit. The tech at Actiontec informed me how to bypass it (Thank You again!!!) The unit has been working very well for the last month that I have had it with absolutely no problems. It supports the two laptops and two desktops I have running on my wireless home network easily. I would suggest picking up one of these units on Ebay for $15-$25 if you have even the most basic understanding of how to set up your DSL service. I spent about an hour setting up my DSL service including time to e-mail Actiontec. That comes out to about $100/hr I saved over using AT&T. Well worth the extra effort in my opinion. And two thumbs up to Actiontec for their support. That in itself was worth purchasing this router. I will have no hesitation in purchasing any of their other equipment.Read full review
