Cormack McCarthy writes in an unusual style. He does not use quotation marks, and he frequently uses pronouns to which you cannot contact a previous character. However, this unusual style is easily acclimated to as you get into the swing of it and realize what he is doing. He also uses short conversations written in Spanish, but even if you don't read Spanish, the meanings are usually clear enough. His stories in the Trilogy are about the coming of age of young men, and the unusual reasons that they take off on a "quest" in foreign areas. I had read the first story of the trilogy, and it was so good, I had to have the other two stories, and so ordered the book with all three in one volume. McCarthy has a grasp of a young man's thinking as he comes to an age to want to be a man. His descriptions of the country of Mexico and the people, in the pre-World War II era are graphic and enlightening. His knowledge of the country seems accurate. I would highly recommend these novel-length stories to any reader who appreciates Jack London, Frank Dobie, Benjamin Capps, Mark Twain or Louis L'Amour or anyone who is interested in the American West. I noticed that the prices were higher for the McCarthy books than many of the other books, and I assume that I am not the only one who is interested in buying them. It was well worth it.Read full review
Cormac McCarthy is an incredible author. His command of the English language is awsome. I am not a particular fan of novels of the Old West, but McCarthy could make his grocery list entertaining. He is discriptive in the extreme and his vocaublary is enormous. His tales are most often tragic and they just seem to stop rather than end. If you want a story with a happy ending, skip his books. If you like a book where the author is able give your a vivid mental image of the setting and deep insight into the characters, you will not find a better writter. I have now read everthing he has published and place him among my favorite authors.
Good to have the trilligy in one handsome volume.
