Soldier Blade is one of the best 2D shooters ever made. It is a precise blend of excellent graphics and gameplay, the levels are varied and populated with unique bosses and mini-bosses. It has a sharp, but balanced difficulty ramp. The only problem is it's very short and could easily be beaten in an hour by a skilled player.
