Thunderscape (SSI , 1995) is one of the finest RPGs made by SSI. It was the first game that was taking place in Aden, an original fantasy world created by SSI, populated by mutated beasts and giant insectoid-like creatures called "nocturnals" (the second -and last- game in the "World of Aden" series was Entomorph:Plague of the Darkfall). The VGA graphics are good but not impressive. By 1995 a lot of games already used high resolution SVGA graphics and although some spell effects look spectacular, on the whole the game looks a bit dated and resembles games published 2-3 years earlier. But if you overlook the simple graphics you'll find a wonderful RPG with a well-crafted and fascinating world to explore, lots of original monsters to fight and a main quest that will hold your attention from beginning to end. Like most traditional RPGs, "Thunderscape" is combat-heavy but unlike other games of the same genre, the fighting never becomes tedious. The battles are turn-based and don’t last very long so as to become tiresome, there is a great variety of monsters that challenge you to discover their weaknesses and the user-friendly interface makes it easy to organize your strategy with just a few mouse-clicks. Even without the game manual, with a little experimentation you can easily learn how to play the game. In conclusion, a great RPG that is still worth picking up even today. The game works fine on modern computers thanks to DosBox.Read full review
