Touchdown Football is an action-strategy sports game for one or two players. The football field is shown from an elevated side perspective which shows about 20 yards of the field at once. The action on the field scrolls left and right. Each player selects from a number of formations at the beginning of each play. There are nine basic defensive formations including Blitz, Zone, and goal Line. The other six formations are left and right variations of the Monster, Prevent, and Tight formations. In addition, a kick return formation is automatically selected when the offense selects a punt. There are eleven basic offensive formations. Three of these are kicking plays: left/right Field Goal and Punt. The other eight include the Shotgun, Slot, Strong, and I formations. After being selected, the play may be changed by calling an audible. Passing and blocking actions can be set for most of the offensive formations. Passing patterns may be selected individually for the left and right receivers. The patterns include Streak, Post, Side Line, and Buttonhook. The blocking options allow the offensive line to block left, right, or straight. During game play, the joysticks control individual players on the field. The offensive player controls either the quarterback (who is also used to run the ball) or the receiver to whom the ball is thrown. The defensive player always controls the free safety.
