This series follows the Revolutionary War from the start. It seems to have all the facts correct and it is put in an entertaining way. It is a great story to begin with, and the writers take advantage of that. I learned that Valley Forge was more than just a camp for the winter. George Washington used it to train the troops so they would be skilled enough to go up against British Regulars. They also throw in all the warts, ie:: Von Steuben was thrown out of the German Army due to sexual indiscretions. We see Benefict Arnold as a flawed human being who really did get a couple of slights by the Army. Not enough to make another turn trator but enough for an insecure type like Arnold to decide to turn traitor, along with help from his Tory wife. I recommend this to anyone, whether you are a history buff or not. Learn how difficult these people had it in order to give us a new country and you will never take your country for granted again.Read full review

I bought this DVD set to use as a review/finish to our American Revolution Homeschool unit for my two kids, ages 8 and 10. We have watched 2 DVDs so far. Overall it' pretty good. It is a documentary by the History Channel. I like the balance between the acting which is narrated and the Historians' discussions/explanations. The actors who portray Washington, Franklin, J. Adams. resemble the famous Americans fairly well. My kids are able to understand everything discussed so far. On the negative side: I feel it is a bit incomplete-there was no mention of S. Adams at the onset of the rebellion and so far no mention of Lafayette. So far (after 2 DVDs) there has only been 1 inappropriate scene I've had to FF over (Howe? and woman in bed but fully clothed). The battle scenes are not too gruesome, they do show blood, but my kids are old enough to understand it is just acting. Also, several scenes (like the war ships at sea) are used over and over again! Overall, a pretty informative series.Read full review
This History Channel series is fantastic! It’s entertaining, easy to follow, and educational. The acting is extremely good and the voiceovers are exceptional! This 4 DVD Box Set is very well designed. It comes in a cardboard case with 4 thin plastic cases that hold each DVD. A must have for every collection.

This History Channel series is hard to beat. One of the strong points of the series is that it doesn't confine itself to the same old historical accounts but manages to investigate the many human stories behind the stories. Of course the series discusses the causes of the war and the major battles, but it also offers firsthand accounts and numerous lesser known stories. For example, I was surprised to hear about the involvement of slaves as fighting men on both sides of the war. Also the detailed story of Benedict Arnold goes a long way to explaining the true reason/reasons for his treason. I know there are several other series out there dealing with this topic, but I can't imagine how any could be any better than this wonderful and entertaining presentation.
This series is broad, in depth. I was surprised to see that it was a History Channel product. Basically, it tells the whole story of the so-called Revolution, and doesn't skip the desultory American campaign in Canada. Well done. Most enjoyable. Impressive.
