Making a splash on the scene in 2006, V for Vendetta may not cater to any one set of movie-goers, but seems to fit into niche of its own. Just as George Orwell's novel "1984" attempted to paint a portrait of our own future, this film seems to have done so with believability and impact. The Wachowski Brothers wrote the screenplay and can greatly be recognized with the high brow sci-fi "Matrix Trilogy" which gave them the credibility to do just about anything they want in film. The story-line, although complex at times, seems to always come together and present the future through the eyes a madman and his semi-captor cohert Evey (Natalie Portman), a working class young lady, that has as many high ideals as most, but tries to comprehend V (Hugo Weaving), who hides his identity behind the mask of a madman. Little do we know that V was seeking vengeance upon the leaders of the now nation lead by the Grand Prime Minister of Britian played by John Hurt. The tension that develops as our bold and charismatic freedom fighter V schemes and plot to get payback from the people that scarred him for life. This film has many different fight scenes with confusing and unexpected cat and mouse play between V and the so-called establishment that wish to snuff him out. The mailing of the masks to various places even makes it harder to stop him since everyone wants to mimic his progress. The exactness and timing of certain events in this film make it a real knuckle chewer. Natalie Portman delivers an astounding range of emotional power in this film and helps the film along by revealing a side to Evey that we don't see at the beginning. I give this a 5/5 for action, intrigue, cleverness, and forcing us to find no middle ground between the opposing views that this film screams for us to do. Vee, code name V, both casualties of a repressive fascist state in England bring forth an unlikely alliance against a regime along with dramatically divergent ways of dealing with Evie losing her parents and brother to the government's social engineering a crisis - shades of 911 - to seize control of the island's population while making lots of money repressing people. Fear sells, well, at least for awhile. After a chance meeting where V rescues Evie from a post curfew encounter with street undercover police - who simply wish to unzip her and uncork their joy (rape and kill her). V interrupts these police while walking to view his planned destruction the Baily building, a government building - a symbol to justice. Having no interest in V, the cop flashes his badge of authority to V where the badge simply has bitter memories from when he was exploited by the regime reminiscent of Hitler's medical "experiments" where the predictable outcome of their slavery was death, sex slavery or humiliation. Legitimacy of the state perished here too hidden away through the media filters. Full of twists and irony, V delivers a riveting story that only a movie could deliver. Drama, action, conflict between the individual and the state - V shares similar perspectives to Freud but with much action, drama and a captivating story. Written by the Wachowski, brothers, V for Vendetta is a classic originating in the picture book of the 1980s where dominant government norms came from Margaret Thacher, who imposed their religious values at the expense of the people's lives and fortunes. V lays bare the dichotomy between the instruments of television and newspaper images and stories as the reality is far different. Simply put, V for Vendetta is a must see movie.Read full review
