CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is recognizably darker than the Mel Stuart-directed 1971 version starring Gene Wilder. Though the mysterious chocolate factory has been closed for 15 years, it continues to produce and ship candy all over the world. When a contest promises a tour of the plant to the lucky finders of five golden tickets hidden inside wrappers, no one is more excited than Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore), an impoverished boy whose family lives mere steps from the factory. Though he can barely afford even one candy bar, fate intervenes, and Charlie finds the last golden ticket. I enjoyed this movie at least as much as I liked the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory of yesteryear with Gene Wilder in the title role. There are several key artistic differences between the films based on a book from author Roald Dahl, but the key plotlines follow through both of them in pretty much the same way. The destinies of a simple, young boy with very little in life but a loving family and an eccentric and wealthy enterpreneur who has banished the world away come together because of a golden ticket, and both of their lives are rewarded. Johnny Depp does well as Wonka, and the cinematography and CGI make this movie an excellent visual treat for kids of all ages. Enjoy!
I loved the original version of this movie but this version gives an interesting twist b/c everything isn't so happily ever after at the end. however, i really love the message that resonates throughout the film: home is where your heart is. Depp's portrayal of Wonka is unique and inventive. He may not be likable but he really isn't trying to be. There are a lot of deep themes through out the movie which may make it boring for younger audiences. But overall, a nice film to watch with your family.
when i first watched this movie i actually didn't like it. but i think it was because i was expecting it to be like the first one. and i felt that johny depth was really over acting. but i gave it another try and since i wasn't expecting it to be like the first it was actually pretty darn good. i really liked this movie. you just have to give it a chance i think that people will like this movie if they haven't see the original. and if they have they have to watch this movie then watch it again a year later
