The camera incorporates mechanical adjustments for settings which is great for visual people. Otherwise, it's automatic entirely - auto focus, etc. Camera has a very fast focus, indoors and out, and has a Pentax sturdiness about it. The optional battery pack that attaches to the bottom is great. It allows use of your own rechargeable batteries (quantity 4) or alkaline, instead of using the two standard Lithium batteries that are non-rechargeable and costly to replace. The camera model can be prone to sticking mirror problems, as evident with some for sale "as parts". In the past I purchased a working "new" old stock ZX-5N from an individual that had it for a back up camera and never used. On receiving the item, the mirror locked up on the third click of the shutter. I have purchased "as parts" ZX-5N since then with plans to dissassemble and explore the problem. So this recent purchase of a fully working ZX-5N camera was welcomed. Another issue is spring failure for the pop up flash, but this is an easy fix. These problems should not influence purchase of the camera, as when these are fixed/upgraded, you have a camera that performs far better than its competition and will most likely not need repair again. So for people still wanting the 35mm film experience and the fun with manually setting aperature or shutter priority (or automatic program setting if prefered), this is an excellent camera to enjoy the hobby with.Read full review
With this camera you can make good shots even with your eyes shut. It have good autofocus system and quality automatic exposure meter, so all you need is just push the button. Also you can use exposure correction and bracketing. Of course, instead of auto-shooting you may wish to adjust shutter speed, aperture size (or both), focus manually and take the photo with picture exactly as you want. Pentax K is pretty universal bayonet, so you can use almost any Pentax optics (and every compatible lens too) with it. With cheap adapters you can use some other lenses, such as old M42 screw-mount optics (some of this lenses are very cheap and pretty amazing, of course, if you can find some :-). Built-in flash is not very useful and not very powerfull, but in some cases it can help you brighten the subject in contr-light or shot something with insensible film. It have very light weight (about 600 gramms with standart optics), so your neck will not be on fire at the end of the day. It is less failsafe, than 100%-mechanical “bulletproof” Zenith :-), but this is Japanesse camera, so dont’t worry about its lifetime.Read full review
This camera does not have the fine construction of a Super Program but still seems to be fairly robust and is similarly light in weight and compact [much more so if you factor in the ME Winder 2 on the Super Program]. I have the extra battery pack which adds weight and bulk but does allow AA batteries to be used. Like the Super Program [SP]the ZX-5N is easy to use and quiet and has a variety of exposure modes including TTL flash. Controls are remarkably well thought out on the whole and I quickly figured it out without a manual. The view finder is not as bright as the SP and the displayed values in the finder can easily disappear in bright conditions, but the small LCD display [same location as the SP] helps here. Film loading is quick and reliable and the winder is surprisingly quiet. Auto focus is fast though the lens I have sounds a bit rough - perhaps a better Pentax [I have the 35-80 SMC] or Sigma/Tamron lens would be a sensible purchase. The pop-up flash seems to be a weak area and mine needs to be propped up with a finger! But it works well at short range. I regard this camera as a perfect, inexpensive and convenient camera for colour print film: something to take everywhere without worrying about it being lost or stolen. With the right lenses I am sure it could to fine work with transparency film too. Subsequent to beginning this review, I tried a Fuji Sensia slide film using both the Pentax 35-80 F lens and the Pentax 100-300 F lens [mostly using a tripod] and the results were rather good: exposures seemed perfect, capturing the subtle colours of a small lake with its ripples, reflections and other details. Sharpness seemed fine and allowed for projection at about 4ft width without reservations.Read full review
I wanted an inexpensive Pentax film SLR with autofocus. This has good metering, many useful features, and is fun and easy to use.
Love Pentax Film equipment, the ZX-5n series was the last of some of the best film camera bodies. Have some others, wore out / broke some, time for another body. Passed all checks, including shutter speed, time in mSec with a tester. ZX-5n 3049268 60 15.52 15.53 15.51 125 7.75 7.78 7.73 250 3.92 3.93 3.91 500 2.01 1.99 2 1000 0.96 1 1.02 2000 0.48 0.48 0.49
