This DVD set is a must for those who into Japanese horror movies. It takes Japanese superstition to new level and incorporates romance in a "love with a lizard" kind of way. There are times where it can get tedious in it's story line, but this is in tradition with other Japanese horror films, as it relays the basis of the type of superstition. The idea of a person being able regrow their lost limbs and/or body, has always been a fascination to some japanese. We are able to regrow lost tissue when we are injured, as lizards and such are able to regrow lost tails and limbs. The Japanese have speculated with this ability to new level, suggesting what a human might go through, if the damage to a human body was devastating enough. This is the basis of Tomie. The Tomie Collection is a set of movies that deals with the concept of a cursed woman, Tomie, doomed to be reborn after being killed. She is never allowed to grow old, but when she dies, her body grows again from the head at accelerated rate. Each time, she is found by someone who feels pity on her, and takes care of her, all the while growing a love for Tomie, becoming a victim. As Tomie grows her body again, she becomes more abusive, and revenge becomes a overbearing urge for her. In her revenge, she develops a love for another person, usually a girl. The victim, seeing Tomie's affection for another, goes into a jealous rage, subsquently severing Tomie's head, and being killed themselves or arrested for murder. Thus, the cycle continues.Read full review
Even though I was thoroughly entertained by these movies, my favorite thing about them had nothing to do with the plot. My favorite thing about them was the Japanese dialogue was pretty simple, making it a great review for someone like myself whose langauge skills need lots of work. I mean, if you think about it, horror movies are ideal study tools, because the characters, being frightened, often repeat thier lines several times, which is very nice if you're trying to memorize vocabulary. And even if it's a good movie, the characters are going to say predictable things, like "Who's there?" or "Stop!!" and of course, "AAAGGGHHH!!" In these movies, it's "BAKEMONO!! BAKEMOONOOO!!!" (Monster! Monnnsteer!) But if you don't speak Japanese at all, don't despair, there is subtitles. And it is a fun series. Tomie is played by different actresses in each movie, which is a little bit annoying and distracting. However, once I got over my annoyance, I came to the conclusion it gave each movie an individual flavor. It allows you to see Tomie from a slightly different prospective in each movie, instead of each movie being another endless round of Tomie being killed and brought back to life. I thought she was the most sympathetic in Replay, even though she did unambiguously bad things I found myself feeling a little sorry for her, because she is always getting killed by people who claim to adore her. But in Forbidden Fruit, she just seemed manipulative, and I was rooting for the father and daughter to find a way to finally outwit her. The movie in this series I liked the least was Another Face. It's not that the stories wern't good (although being shorter, they were less detailed), but it being filmed on video instead of film gave it kind of a cheap look that I just didn't like.Read full review
Hmm, I love scary movies and that's why I decided to buy the Tomie collection, a collection of the first 5 Tomie films. I have to say that I quite like the stories, of how there's a girl who just won't die. This was my first time watching Tomie, I have never seen or read the manga, and I love this. Tomie truly is a creepy and scary girl!!^o^ I read the story descriptions of the item, and I was intrigued by them. Hmm, there are many scary scenes, but I believe that Tomie is both scary AND creepy. For she is an evil girl who only thinks of herself, and I quite hate girls like her, who manipulates people into damaging their lives and doing things for her own enjoyment. I like how the actresses protray Tomie, for they know how to be creepy and hateful like her (^^). I both like and am kind of disappointed that they used a different actress in each film to play the role of Tomie. It is interesting, for it seems that we see Tomie for what she is actually like, but we get to see a different look of her, too. We can see that she acts really cute and pretty, but inside is a real monster. I like scary movies like this, for I know for sure what type of girl Tomie really is. (Laughs) But, there are many stupid characters in the Tomie films, esp. those who act against her but don't know it when SHE is using them against the good people. She makes me mad, but these Tomies make me realize that I could be smart and healthy in both my life and the choices that come my way. The way Tomie is, is just another lesson that we need to learn. So yes, Tomie is great to watch!!!^_^Read full review

I feel in love with Tomie despite its gore. I bought my first tomie dvd as a set at my local best buy, it came with Tomie:begginging and Tomie:Revenge. I absolutly loved it, at first i had not expected the gore. When i finished watching it i realized i would definitly watch it again despite its gore. Then i found out that there was more to this Tomie series i had just heard about. A set with 5 movies in one box, was an awsome deal. Good condition, a great buy for any Tomie fan.
