  • Easy on the eyes

Yes, easy on the eyes, because if it weren't for Dorothy Stratten, there wouldn't be much else to look at. This is one movie I added to my list of top "Star Wars" rip-offs, though it's not totally fair to call it a rip-off like many others as it's more of a parody or satire of sci-fi in general. There are some clear influences from Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, and possibly others that might be more subtle (they do have the theme from 2001- A Space Odyssey). If you're reading this, you either heard/read about how bad it is and wanted to see or already know how bad it is and that's why you love it. The plot is fairly loose in what it's trying to show the viewer, it doesn't truly pick up on the actual story until nearly a third of the way through and even then, it doesn't truly stay on track 100%. This is also another one of those movies that seems to think that Texas will be the main influence on how people dress thousands of years in the future. Ok, so it doesn't take place that far ahead, but there's always a cowboy in these bad sci-fi movies. There is no nudity, despite the main and only female lead being a Playmate, which that is a whole other story in of itself. Yes, mostly what she wears is a mostly skin tight uniform with a boob window... think Power girl. This was Dorothy Stratten's first movie and people have likened her to being the next Marilyn Monroe. Maybe I am too young to have ever known who she was, but I honestly don't see it, but I digress. Her character is a robot built to... well, do something on the ship. It's never really clear because they show her in this huge chair obviously doing things, but they have a crew that already pilots, fights and repairs everything. The only time they make a clear reference of her abilities is during a dinner scene where she is dressed up in a frilly maid's uniform. Not bad to look at, but not really needed either. The visuals are something to be desired, though they are certainly not the worst of all time. Models and sets are fairly decent, but most makeup and creature effects are lacking. There is a Spock parody character and his prosthetics are just horrible. One other notable thing to mention that you may have heard is the inclusion of the Adam West Batmobile. For some odd reason, the old Batmobile makes a stationary appearance and not just as a background prop, Galaxina walks right past it, not once, but twice and it is even shown a couple more times during the entire scene she is in. I did note that this version had some cuts in it that were not present in another copy I have, but this has been remastered and cleaned up for a much better picture, which was nice compared to the other copy. So, if you're looking for bad sci-fi at its best and don't mind really bad writing (seriously, the captain's last name is Butt, what could you expect?), then this is for you!

  • Entertaining comic space fantasy. "Galaxina."

Exceptionally pleased with comic value of the movie, plus impressed by the innovative techniques used in making the film - the scenes shot in infra-red, for one thing - done in 1980. Voice-over special feature commentary was a plus as well in telling about how the movie was made. Movie was enjoyed enough to lead to the search for and purchase of a "Galaxina" poster. "Galaxina" wasn't a 'rip-off' of "Star Wars", it was/is an entertaining, well made comedy spoof of it, and can be enjoyed for what it was made to be.
