Now Voyager is Awesome!! Bette Davis at her Greatest!
Bette Davis plays it all in Now Voyager. She starts out as the homely (I mean HOMELY), old maid daughter, Charlotte Vale, of a rich, domineering widow played by Gladys Cooper. Through the intervention of her brother's wife, Dr. Jasquith, a psychiatrist, (Claude Rains)is brought in and recommends that Charlotte be committed to his spa-asylum for therapy. She goes and is transformed to a young woman of confidence and beauty. I will never forget the scene where Charlotte gets on a cruise ship after leaving the asylum; her wide brimmed hat hides her face until she looks up and now she is beautiful!! That was spectacularly done!
While on the cruise she meets Jerry Durrance (Paul Henreid) and falls for him and he for her. However, he is in an unhappy marriage. She goes home, and her mother tries to put her back into the spinster mode. It is so satisfying to see her resist Mrs. Vale's demands. But Jerry's daily shipment of white camellias keeps Charlotte's hopes alive. And then her mother dies, and Charlotte feels guilty because they argued right before her death.
A second trip to the spa-asylum finds Charlotte all involved with a little girl who reminds her of herself. She has no self-esteem, cries nightly, and misses her daddy. Could this be the cure for Charlotte's depression?
From there, you are on your own. I will tell you two things more: (1) the Max Steiner music will haunt you for days. It won the Academy Award that year.(2) This is the movie known for Jerry (Henreid) lighting two cigarettes and giving one to Charlotte (Davis). He does this routine four times during the movie.
Bette Davis was nominated for Best Actress for this performance, and Gladys Cooper was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Neither won. However, this was Bette's top grossing movie of all times. She was now established as a top star for all times.
Also, this is the most wonderful Bette Davis movie that she made. Not afraid to look ugly at first, Bette is even more beautiful when she is transformed. Forget "Dark Victory," "The Letter," "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane," "The Little Foxes," "All About Eve," and "Jezebel." THIS IS IT!!Read full review
This is an excellent movie from 1942 starring Old Hollywood Stars - Bette Davis, Paul Heinreid and Claude Rains in a very good love story with a lot of other things going on iin the background - you'll find a lot here to keep you entertained and interested in what is happening amongst the characters and you'll also be wondering how the film is going to end. You won't be able to figure it out, but you'll find yourself hooked from the very start. Bette Davis was nominated for Best Actress Oscar but she didn't win this time around. All of the actors put their all into this film and I think everyone that has a heart or has truly really been in love will enjoy this film. XLNT!
Great DVD at a great price! My only disappointment is that it appears that the DVD was recorded at a low volume and so I had to fully raise the volume on my TV in order to hear the sound clearly. Other than that, the DVD was in excellent condition.
I like old movies. I am just glad Betty didn’t take the advice she was first given to find another field. She is one of the greatest female actress of her time. Really enjoyed the movie.
I'm glad I bought this DVD. You can never have enough of the classics. The video quality is excellent. Great film, too. Wonderful performances by the entire cast. These films used to be called "tear jerkers". Now they're called "chick flicks". Oh well. Try this one out if you like the oldies.
Hope this helps. Tom Schenk.
