Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam epic, loosely based on the novel HEART OF DARKNESS by Joseph Conrad, tells the story of Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), a special agent sent into Cambodia to assassinate an errant American colonel (Marlon Brando). Willard is assigned to a navy patrol boat operated by Chief (Albert Hall) and three hapless soldiers (Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, and Larry Fishburne). They are escorted on part of their journey by an air cavalry unit led by Lt. Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall), a gung-ho commander with a love of Wagner, surfing, and napalm. After witnessing a surreal USO show featuring Playboy playmates, and an anarchic battle with the Viet Cong at a bridge, Willard reaches Colonel Kurtz's compound. A crazed photojournalist and Kurtz groupie (Dennis Hopper) welcomes the crew, and Willard begins to question his orders to "terminate the colonel's command." The grueling production and Coppola's insistence on authenticity led to vast budget overruns and physical and emotional breakdowns. Vietnam War on LSD
The Complete Dossier is both versions of this great Vietnam film. It's a neat case as well showing scenes and quotes from the movie. It's both discs in a cardbord case (that looks like a small dossier) lol. Disc 1 has Part 1 of both versions; the Disc 2 has Part 2 of both versions as it's such a lengthy movie, but not boring or repetitous. If you've seen it before you know the plot, and the Redux version, has some nude scenes of the hot Playboy Bunnies at the concert! Yaaa ... This is a violent and repulsive War movie as told (narrated) from the eyes of an Assassin, (Martin Sheen) whom in real life had a heart attack, and may have been the only sane member of the Cast or Crew. They tried to use real cadavers which led to doped and drugged film Crew being arrested, Brando was too fat to film etc. This film is both beautiful (filmed in Philippines) and utterly horrifying, not for the squeamish. One of the type things that could or do go on in wars and different countries.

Refreshing the memory
I have always wanted to see Apocalypse Now in one sitting. It is an awesome movie with interesting messages. There was one scene ( of many ) that had a famous quote ( never get out of the boat ) that I heard in another show and it was a metaphor used to describe what happened. A True Rememberance.....
I served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive of the North Vietnamese in 1968. When I first saw this monumental movie, I had flashbacks from my time there. Coppola has brought all the elements of genius production together in this film. The music....the ambience....the tragedy of the war. I was left with a feeling somehow of isolation and numbness ot both Willard and Kurtz, the two main characters of the film. The river traveled being the journey through the deepest parts of their souls. One must see this film. The ultimate Apocalypse.
