The game's fast-paced action is great! The graphics are pretty good as well. The gameplay is awkward/hard to master though, and gets repetitive very quickly. The long loading times are very frustrating, especially in a game where your character is constantly dying. This makes the game difficult to get into. There are also lots of hidden extras that are meant to enhance gameplay and add to replay value, but this is nearly impossible even on the easiest setting - you have to take on hordes of enemies without getting hit once. The game would be an excellent buy for gamers who still remember the original Golden Axe series or if they are just into gratuitous gore (one way to unlock bonuses is to achieve a certain number of dismemberments - definitely earns its "M" rating!).
Graphics are good, story is good, controls are really difficult! And this game is insanely hard. I bought it around 29 March 09 and am just now getting to a review. I have had it for some years now and still have not beaten it! haha. but to be fair, I kinda stopped playing it a long time ago. There is this one part of a level where you have to jump across a huge pit (or fall to your death) and I literally played that one part for about 2 wks before I was able to get across!!! I often say that there's a lot of old games that I used to love playing that I wished they would re-make on this generation of consoles...Golden Axe should've stayed on the genesis! The graphics are there...and Tyris looks really good...but she is the only playable charcater (that I know of) the beasts feel very mechanical and it is hard to get the hang of them. The bosses are extremely difficult, and so is getting the timing down needed to dodge attacks from enemies. The whole fighting engine is based on dodge enemy attack-then counter attack. so dodging is a vital skill to learn. Maybe one day I will put this game back in my system and try it out again. This is a good trip down memory lane, but thats about where it stops. Overall, pass on this unless you are a DIEHARD Golden-Axe fan.Read full review
Golden Axe was one of the first games I played which initially got me interested in video games back in 1991. I mainly bought this release for nostalgic gameplay. I read several reviews from the gaming industry and I was shocked that this game was rated so poorly. I rented the game after reading these reviews to see for myself. The gameplay is not bad, it has a decent storyline, and the effects are great. It is a challenging game, I'm stuck on a level just now. This is fine by me because I don't buy games just to fly through them as fast as possible on the easiest difficulty setting. One thing I think will irritate people is the blocking and evading of enemy attacks. It frustrated me at first, but once I got some practice it wasn't so bad. In real life, being attacked by 5 or more enemies at once you're going to get hit that's just life. The beasts are fun to use against your enemies. Each has it's own different abilities and attacks. Controlling the beasts is a bit sluggish which gamers may find unsatisfactory. You will eventually get knocked off by an enemy or the beast will die from attacks. This gives the game some balance and keeps it from being too easy. The game does have some longevity even after you complete the story mode. There are challenge modes where you can replay levels to try to achieve a better completion rating (i.e. time it took to finish the level, amount of loot obtained, etc.) This will increase the amount of tribute you gain to unlock other swords and items. Everyone is different, so my review of this game can be completely different than that of others. I bought it, I like it, and I got it for way less than what it retails for.Read full review
while golden axe may seem a bit simple (not a huge library of special moves etc), its battle style is extremely fun for me. it utilizes a perry counter attack mechanic that is very very fun. the game is very challenging, i doubt many people beat it/finish it very fast - even extremely experienced gamers. its one that i love to sit with and perfect my fighting style. and it never gets old looking at tyris from behind.
When I was younger I played all 3 orignal Golden Axe games with my farther. They were the best. This new Golden Axe came out in 2008. I didn't see it until 2009 and now in 2010 I got. The graphics are amazing! The story is very interresting. You play as Tyris Flare (female) who's siser in her dragon workshiping cult came uinder attack by the evil Death Addler. You must deafeat his soliders to have vengance. I give this game a 9.7 rateing. highly recomend to any fan of the orignal 3, or any one looking for a good sword weiding, magic useing, beast riding game.
Now this is the hack and slash game you wanted and the ride a fantastic dragon game as well. Great fun slaying enemies either as your character or her beast when she is riding. For extra fun, you get to use the golden axe sometimes for slaughter mayhem and fun. NO rpg but a great world with quests and fun fighting a sure hit in the replay section. You will enjoy having this one for a long time.
And thats pretty much what I can say about it, nothing new really, it's kinda like if it was a bonus of playing the original in 3D, but shouldn;t of been the full game. This game promised many inovations and that didn't happen. The game promised an open world experience but the game makes you follow a path. No multiplayer which made the original a hit. This game is not worth more than $30 in my opinion. Only Golden axe die hard fans who must have all Golden Axe games can really appreciate it, even then, the story this fit into the world of Golden Axe, kinda like if the game had started production as something else and got the Golden axe license thrown on it.
I loved this game not even 10 minutes into it. The best thing about this game that I really liked is the tutorial part. You have to master the tutorial part in order to move on to the actual game play. You must master every special move there is, which I thought was great so that you know how to manuever around effectively. The cinematography is awesome too. The creatures are very unique looking and have a lot of detail to them. I haven't beat it yet, but I would highly recommend this game to anyone who likes strategy/adventure games. For me, this game is a definite 10.
Great game! Awesome graphics! Easy controls! Not for the faint of heart! Tends to get gory at times! Some levels take some serious intermediate skills. You need a stradegy guide to get through the game. Otherwise, you'll go crazy trying to figure things out by yourself!
This game is not as bad as the magazine reviews said. If you liked Conan, God of War, Ninja Gaiden, etc. this is certainly worth a $10 (or less!). It's a perfect game for that dry spell when the game you REALLY want to play is still 3 weeks away. It's pretty true to the original arcade hack 'n slash fun with light puzzle elements. No upgrading your character, but you learn how to use what you have as the game progresses. A solid B-.
