Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel "Casino Royale" has certainly withstood the test of time, and shows us a James Bond quite unlike the movie version. Bond sweats it out in the high stakes show down in the Casino and shows a fear unseen on the big screen. He also shows us a soft and compassionate side in his relationship with his female counterpart Vesper, even to the point of deciding to propose Marriage - James Bond and Marriage?? - Hollywood would cringe. However, as previously noted this is a different Bond than in the theatre. The relationship between Bond and Vesper makes for compelling reading, is central to the flow of this novel, and is only one example of deviations in plot the movie version made. The biggest plot deviation in the first Daniel Craig Bond movie is the ending, which is a completely different story! While I love the film "Casino Royale", you just can't beat Fleming's masterful start of the Bond character found in this novel. Read it - you'll be glad you did.Read full review
