Shadow Dancer is one of those classic games that I remember playing in the arcade but not on a home console. This is one of many good games in the Shinobi series. Featuring a new gameplay element in your ninja attack dog and relying almost entirely on shuriken, this side-scrolling ninja game still plays great and features a difficulty level that hinges mostly on learning the timing of enemy spawns. Highly recommended, but not the best ninja game. I think Stryder, though not a "Shinobi" game, was slightly better.

This game is often over shadowed by Shinobi 2 and 3 but in my opinion is just as good for different reasons. It's also often over looked because it's considered to be too easy. I think that behind all that lies a great game with an awesome mechanic of having a dog as your partner. You do feel a bit over powered with the dog at your side, almost as if the game was designed without the dog in mind. But playing as a Ninja with a killer attack dog by your side should feel over powered! This is a game that you can pick up for cheap, and if you liked the other Shinobi games it's definitely worth a try.

Tough shinobi game I've never played. Tons of fun and very challenging. Game was in great shape for the low price.

After my euphoric experience with Revenge of Shinobi, I was itching to play the next Genesis game of the Shinobi franchise. Unfortunately, I didn't have much money being a kid at the time, so I wasn't able to procure a copy for myself. Luckily, a friend of mine got it for Christmas. What started out as a game full of potential, just ended up as a game full of potential. The graphics are some of the best on the Genesis. The enemies look ominous and evil and the backgrounds are detailed and lively. The regular enemies look cool when they die, bursting into a blueish flame. The fire effects on the first level were quite amazing back in '91. The sound effects are also top-notch. From the digitized voice the main character makes at the beginning of a level to the fast-paced, theatric music score, the arcade experienced is perfectly emulated. Though, and a bad trait in many games, a pretty package can only keep you enthralled for so long. Shadow Dancer fell short in terms of gameplay. The levels are too short, feeling more like bursts instead of complete levels. This is very unfortunate because everything else in Shadow Dancer is great. I guess the worst thing about Shadow Dancer is I felt there could of been much more. Shadow Dancer could of been one of my favorite Genesis games, but lack of level depth was too much of a factor. Maybe if the graphics and sound had been more average, I wouldn't of minded the short length.Read full review
Great retro platformer. The dog is definitely utilized well and is a unique mechanic to the game. The Shinobi series is outstanding and so far this title is up there with revenge of Shinobi but maybe not as polished as Shinobi 3. I love it.
