I've always enjoyed classic gangster flicks and have only now started to add them to my DVD collection and I vaguely remembered watching this as a kid with my pop. Well, I'm glad I bought this. The cinematogrophy coupled with great acting/directing and the premise to get the bad guy's great. Sure, it seems like a cliche', but you have to remember, this was back in the beginnings of 'talkie' films and just as usual Edward G. doesn't take any backtalk from anyone! I think within the first 10 minutes of the film, he slugs and dazes some two-bit punk gangster then hits 'em a second time, knocking him through a glass door. Yeah, he's still great. Another thing that I liked about this film was that Humphrey Bogart was also cast. Nothing like a well dressed, witty, tough talkin' gangster to make some trouble.....for everybody. Heh, if you like gangster flicks as much as I do, get this with no fear. You'll love it.Read full review

Bullets or Ballots (1936) is one of Warner Brothers' exciting, ripped-from-the-headlines gangster movies about a talented policeman (Edward G. Robinson) who is fired when a new police chief comes into power. Robinson is hired by gangster boss Barton MacLane, but the number two man in the outfit (Humphrey Bogart) is convinced Robinson is actually still working for the police as an infiltrator. Meanwhile, Robinson's friend (Joan Blondell) is threatened with ruin when Robinson and the gangsters move in on her numbers racket. Robinson is as great as ever, and the rest of the cast is good too. I would have liked Frank McHugh's and Blondell's parts to be larger, because I enjoy their acting very much. Bogie makes a good enemy for Robinson. The DVD and special features are top quality. This DVD is available individually or in the Warner Bros. Tough Guys boxed set.Read full review

I decided to buy this DVD because I am a very big Bogart fan and I also love old classics like this. I like this movie because it is Bogart's start to fame and he does a very good job on being a ruthless gangster.
Predictable story line. Would like to have seen a different ending. Robinson as always gives a good performance. Even when he plays a cop he seems like a gangster.
