  • A Wonderful Warm Summer Day Wrapped With Youthful Love

I've got Forty + years of serious music listening under me belt along with countless concerts and it has lead me to the conclusion that XTC is the Best British Band Ever (retired...Radiohead gets the #1 current BBBE ;-) Yes, SKYLARKING is deserving of all the gushing you'll read in reviews! It's a wonderful warm summer day wrapped up with youthful love, traveling on a train of time towards the inevitable last stop, buoyed up with hope at the very end with (arguably Colin's best song ever) "Sacrificial Bonfire". Having spent many years as an avid Todd Rundgren fan, I enjoy & appreciate his contributions to this masterpiece. The material is what makes it masterful, the production by Todd was just icing on the cake. That being said, my opinion of Todd has declined considerably over the years. To me Todd is a loud, arrogant self-absorbed "star" while Andy, Colin & Dave could not be more humble. I consider XTC to be on a much higher level musically than Todd could ever hope to achieve. Todd throws out albums like guitar picks and the quality of the material reflects that. You'll get many more gems from plucking XTC's limited catalogue of 12 albums than trenching through Todd's 50+ deep discography. Here’s the crazy thing: as marvelous as Skylarking is, it may not be XTC’s best! Once you branch out from Skylarking, you may place “English Settlement” at the top as I do. Or maybe “Apple Venus” with it’s breathtaking tracks “River Of Orchids” & “Easter Theatre” may push you over the top for it. Regardless, Skylarking holds a special place and can share the spot of Best XTC Album with whatever other one you consider the best :-) Enjoy!
