Emmy Award winner Anthony Hopkins portrays Adolf Hitler during the Nazi leader's last three months sequestered, in his underground bunker, as the Russian Army lays seige to Berlin. A gripping dramatic portrayal with Hopkins in absolutely magnificent form as der Fuehrer with an equally fine supporting cast. Some of the more lurid episodes (eg., the apocalyptic orgy in the upper bunker, and the murder of the six Goebbels' children by his wife) are handled with understated tact and decorum to preserve the integrity of the production. This DVD provides a probing insight into the "endgame" of World War II. The split among the Nazi generals and staff over Hitler's sanity (or lack of it) is especially evident. Actor Richard Jordan (who played "Rumsfeld" in HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER . . . I'm a politician, which means that when I'm not kissin' babies, I'm stealin' their candy!") is cast as Speer, Hitler's architect. Much of the film follows his anti-Nazi perspective of a man immersed by circumstances in this horrific situation, yet standing apart from it due to his moral integrity. Gripping. One of the very best dramatic portrayals of these events, from both the theatrical and authenticity standpoints. Unrated, but probably belongs in the high-end of the PG range. NOT SUITABLE for younger children due to the events involved. No actual nudity, but suggestive situations, violence, mild gore. The only better version is DOWNFALL, which is in German with English subtitles. But, naturally, the two are very similar, only nuances of performance separate the two. Anthony Hopkins is Splendid as Hitler in the BUNKER version, and hearing him rant in English gives added dimensions to the character!Read full review
Anthony Hopkins at his best. What I have read matches this movie perfectly, whereas Hitler was surrounded by dark people like Bormann and Goering, while they too were calling a lot of the shots in the name of Hitler. Hitler was too ill and feeble at this point and the movie shows and depicts to the watcher his probable poor physical appearance and ill mindset at that time, which fits what I have read throughout the years, before the fall of Berlin and to the very end...The props too were accurate, when Hitler(Anothony Hopkins) goes into their room with Eva Braun to die, he uses an exact replica of the pistol in which he carried; a Mauser 7.65MM (32 cal), model HSc...
Other than Anthony Hopkins, as Hitler, this movie was not very well cast. The fact they talked in English and British accents made it much less believable. It’s just dragged on and on. The movie “Downfall” is a far, far better Fuhrer bunker movie.

A truly great historically accurate account of Hitlers last 105 days inside the Bunker. Hitler is played brilliantly by Anthony Hopkins, Richard Jordon and Michael Lonsdale both give equally brilliant performances as well. The Movie is very dark, the tone of the Narrator throughout the movie gives a musty overtone which makes the viewer feel as if they are inside the dank depressing "Bunker" The Music adds to the setting as well. Truly a must see movie...especially if you are a fan of either history or Anthony Hopkins.
