I bought this book because I've enjoyed other writings by Neil Gaiman very much, especially his book "Neverwhere". This is a terrific, dark, fairy-tale style children's story. I won't spoil the plot or content, because it's quite short. It exploits the inherent spookiness of old houses and childhood boredom and the fascination that most children have with mirrors as other worlds. I strongly recommend this book as a book that you could read with, or to, younger children that weren't unduly squeamish and liked creepy things. Older children could read it themselves, but might enjoy having it read to them. Adults will not be as captivated as by Gaiman's more adult writing, but won't hate it. The story absolutely holds its own as a fairy-tale composed in the modern world of monster-movies and video games.Read full review

I bought this book for a class I had to take in college but also so that I could put it in my future classroom library. This version of the book is very easy to read and to carry around because it is paperback. I am pleased with this purchase and highly recommend this version of the book because of the also extras added in the back of the book.
This story is not for the faint of heart. It scared a few adults I know and a 5th grade read aloud was too much for one student. Coraline enters an alternate world very like her own but scarily different. I can't wait to see the movie. Neil Gaiman's books both children and adult are worth exploring.
