Professor White's observational discussion is the antithesis of the feculance propegated in most baby books. He is patient, understanding, critically sound, insightful, and accommodating. This book will help whatever young parent reads it, and will embarrass any old parent (largely because of the common sense that is so rare a part of much current child psychology) who might have bought into some of the more chic theories of child development. He alternates pronouns to be gender-inclusive (in case you can't get past such things), he does not waste time in remonstration, he affirms what most good parents know about the nature of gender and disposition, and he reassures parents with an oft-repeated commentary about how there is no rigid schedule for development. In fact, he even states the heresy (at least among uncritical and impulsive parents and clinicians) that a child may just go from sitting to walking without ever having a crawling phase. If you have young children and want to feel better about the genuine and loving efforts you are making on their behalf, obtain and read this book. Easily accessible, it is organized into roughly defined time segments which mark general developmental periods. I could not possibly recommend this book more enthusiastically. As a college professor, I have found few texts that delight, instruct, and improve the reader. This text does. My wife and I have dubbed it the "Blue Bible" (our original copy has a blue cover) because of how much we relied on it with our first child. Reading and understanding this book will make you better parents, will produce better children, and will improve the world.Read full review
I believe that this book is a must have for any parent of a young child. It does a great job of letting parents know what to expect in their child's development from birth to age 3. It also contains many suggestions on how to encourage a child's development at different stages. I especially like the information on best toys at different stages, and how children outgrow toys that no longer interest them because the child's development changes what s/he is interested in. This is also a good book for grandparents.

I decided to buy it because other mothers recommended. As matter of fact, I am very pleased that I did it. It is wonderful book that states child 's behavior in their development, so the parents would know why they do that, and know how to deal with it.
