SynopsisMeet Egyptologist Amelia Peabody in the first mystery in the Victorian-era set, New York Times bestselling "sparkling series" (Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review ). "If Indiana Jones were female, a wife, and a mother who lived in Victorian times, he would be Amelia Peabody Emerson."-- Publishers Weekly Amelia Peabody, that indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her debut Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal to record her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way to Cairo, Amelia rescues young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been abandoned by her scoundrel lover. Together the two women sail up the Nile to an archeological site run by the Emerson brothers-the irascible but dashing Radcliffe and the amiable Walter. Soon their little party is increased by one-one mummy that is, and a singularly lively example of the species. Strange visitations, suspicious accidents, and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn. Now Amelia finds herself up against an unknown enemy-and perilous forces that threaten to make her first Egyptian trip also her last . . . Praise for Elizabeth Peters and Crocodile on the Sandbank "A writer so popular that the public library has to keep her books under lock and key." - Washington Post Book World "Grand views of Egyptian antiquities . . . a sparkling series." -Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review

  • Great book full of adventure and intrigue

Elizabeth peters “Amelia Peabody” series is a great escape. The stories are full of adventure and intrigue and transport you to the early century, romantic era of pyramid treasure hunting. The books offer a captivating story at a good pace, long enough to be worth it without becoming monotonous and boring. They are devoid of any obligatory language or inappropriate content which makes them great for the whole family. A wonderful literary adventure.

  • The first of a beautiful series..

I have owned and read all of Amelia’s antics and bought this one for a niece having trouble finding good reads without insult to her senses in todays market. Beautifully written, edge of your seat story with an abundance of history thrown in - all while you break up laughing. Very good read.

  • Excellent book in good condition

I found this was the most economical way of getting the first book in a series of books that I was very interested in. The price was low and reasonable and even though the book pages possibly yellow the little bit, they were in great condition!

  • Excellent.

The first of a series. I've read many already. It's a great adventure story and supplies all the basic information. Not necessary to read first but a great place to start the series.
