NotesThe late piano works of Brahms are not for the faint of heart. That's because the pieces are about the heart. Brahms' in particular. Many of them were written for Clara Schumann, with whom Brahms had a mostly unrequited love affair for over forty years. They reflect the deep emotions Brahms experienced, emotions that he put to music in the half-dozen years before his death in 1897. Some of these works are technically hard to play, requiring explosive power and velocity others are less taxing. But all of them demand an exquisite sensitivity and mature sensibility to make them ring true. They've been recorded by the greats and near-greats, all with varying results. In this CD, Gena Raps plays fifteen of her favorite compositions - intermezzi and capriccios, most taken from opus number 116-119. They comprise a varied mix of tempos, form, aesthetics, emotions, and moods, all of which present the artist with the challenge of interpretation.
