NotesDouble 200gm heavyweight vinyl LP pressing. Includes lyric sheet. English Settlement is the fifth studio album and first double album by the English rock band XTC, originally released in 1982. It marked a turn towards the more pastoral pop songs that would dominate later XTC releases, with an emphasis on acoustic guitar, 12-string electric guitar and fretless bass. XTC recorded the album at The Manor Studio in Oxfordshire with producer Hugh Padgham, the engineer of their previous two LPs. Compared to the band's previous releases, English Settlement showcased more complex and intricate arrangements, lengthier songs, lyrics that covered broader social issues, and a wider range of music styles.
This album has them mellowing out from their better earlier stuff- it takes a few listens. It has some complexity but misses the edge of their better work. It is one of their best regarded by their fan base- go figure. I would recommend Dukes of Stratosphere, Drums & Wires, Black Sea, Mummer as their best.
Newly remastered double vinyl is an excellent pressing with quality sound. Wish the packaging was in a gatefold but the inner sleeves have artwork and lyrics.
I have every one of the XTC reissues approved by Partridge and they are wonderful from the artwork to the sound. I have 2 more pre purchased and can't wait to get them.
