I REMEMBER THIS MOVIE WHEN IT WAS IN THEATERS BACK IN 73. MY MOM AND GRANDMA WENT TO GO SEE IT, BUT AT FIRST I DIDN'T WANT TO. BUT THEN I CHANGED MY MIND AND SAW IT. I ENJOYED IT. I USE TO SEE IT DURING THE HOLIDAYS LIKE EASTER ON TV,. BUT NOW YOU DON'T SEE IT. THOSE THAT ARE. OF SKEPTICS, IT IS A GREAT MOVIE TO WATCH WITH FRIENDS OR A CHURCH GROUP. GIVE THIS MOVIE A CHANCE.

The movie has been around for decades. It is, without a doubt, a different take on the Gospels. Although the accuracy in portraying Jesus's last days leaves much to be desired, the music, theatrics and presentation is exciting and engaging. My teens have fallen in love with this 70's throwback. This particular DVD presentation has many extra features I had never seen before. Worth the watch.

The concept music and lyrics are brilliant. I remember the original cast recording from the early 70s which I loved and saw the movie when it came out then too. I was not impressed with the movie at the time but after seeing the live NBC broadcast and an amateur production recently I decided to give the movie a second look. The music and singing stick pretty much to the original recording which I liked. The location filming in the desert and outside was spectacular. The acting was good. I liked the combining of some period costuming with for the time hippie costuming. The Temple scene, Gethsemane scene, Trial Before Pilate, songs by Judas were very moving. Emotional relief came from the two very nice Mary Magdalene songs. My only problem with this as well as the two productions I saw was the dancing which serves no purpose particularly in the Herod song and JCS the title track itself. Those two songs would have been better just being sung. I was brought up in a strict Catholic household and over the years with a little bit of an open mind I have come to understand the story and lyrics better than originally. This movie will do that even better. Read full review

This movie holds up beautifully over time. The hippie anachronisms still work, and the staging and landscape setting always struck me as genius. Performances are consistently energetic and effective. This version is much stronger than the 2001 production, which was overwrought. I think the reason Jesus Christ Superstar works so well is that it's told from the viewpoint of confused doubters: Mary Magdalene, Judas, Pilate, etc.--and probably the composer and lyricist as well. Everyone knows Jesus is special, but no one understands how or why he makes them feel the way they do. I always felt that leaving out the resurrection was a cop-out, but from the viewpoint of a confused doubter, it works--especially since Neely doesn't get back on the bus. Nice twist.
I grew up listening to the music from this musical on the brown-cover double lp album. It's only fitting that I loved the movie and want to own the DVD to watch it whenever I feel like watching it. The music is classic, the characters all very familiar and the filming of this movie in the Holy Land is breath-taking. You can sing your way through or just sit and watch and absorb the beauty of it all. You won't regret spending an hour and a half with Jesus Christ Superstar.
