As a retired media instructor with an expertise in film noir and great cinema I applaud Selleck for this extremely well-produced series. He is excellent as the sullen alcoholic, reminding us of the great noir anti-heros who just plod through life, barely existing. No joy in winning a case, but just another day to have to exist. Note the final scenes where he looks out over the landscape continuing to contemplate his, fate/destiny? But it's also the overall production quality, tone and mood, cinematography, and terse fresh dialogue that makes these shows terrific. The music by Jeff Beal and terrific acting and directing also go into the blend to make these shows worth watching over and over. Best thing William Devane has ever done, for example. I thought Selleck couldn't top the quality of his westerns done for TNT but this Jesse Stone series is finer than any contemporary movie, and among the very best grown-up drama you'll ever see.Read full review
I admit to have always liked pretty much everything Tom has done before and the "Jessie Stone" series is a nice fit for him. A bit slow paced but the acting is excellent, the stories are nicely acted out, and more importantly, everything is believable. This one is the 3rd in the series and I sure hope they come out with more. Not for the fast-paced viewer though since 'Jessie' has come from California as an alcoholic, depressed divorced cop needing to leave the fast-lane, fast. He relocates to the east coast in probably the only job willing to hire him for, so there it is. Big gritty city life behind him - welcome to small town, clean coastal not-so-fast-paced crime solving. I love his acting as he is his usual smart, calculating self trotting along with a sweet, quiet golden retriever who adopted Jessie after his owner was murdered. Good viewing, beautiful scenery and superb Tom.Read full review
If you read the books you know that Tom Selleck is about 20 years older than Jesse Stone in the book. That said, he is perfect as the character and now I have a hard time imagining him any other way. The movies are well done. I'm not always sure why there is a need to change some things from the book. (I understand about shortening up a book or taking out a subplot) All in all, this covered the book fairly closely and I would watch Tom Selleck, in this role, even if it didn't. These are quality movies.
The Jesse Stone series are modern crime mysteries set in a small town; not abstract like Twin Peaks, not as complicated as an Agatha Christie plot, and definitely not a daytime drama like Matlock; well thought-out dialogue written for adults that flows at a nice pace and isn't rushed to fit in more words that aren't needed; smooth camera work and serene small-town scenery on the coast; a nice place to escape to for 90 minutes with a not-too-twisted, non-supernatural mystery that gets resolved and the imperfect hero with the clever comebacks is Tom Selleck.
I liked Robert B Parker as a writer. (He sadly died last year) His plots were good, kinda samey in some respects. But the dialogue, oh the sweet, sweet dialogue... I just love the way Parker made his characters talk. From Jesse Stone to Sunny Randall to of course, Spenser, the dialogue is where it's at. The film adaptations of the Jesse Stone novels are no exception, they keep the same fantastic dialogue, they don't try to change it, or update it, because they know the dialogue is the heart and soul of the books.
A fourteen year old girl turns up dead in a lake and Jesse must figure out not only why they died, and how they died, but who they are. Like I said, before the plots are good, but in my opinion, secondary to the dialogue. This one is no exception. It's like reading the book but having the added bonus of moving pictures added. Good stuff!Read full review
