Silent Hunter won Submarine Simulation Game of the Year back in 1996. It's a challenging game that puts you in command of a US Navy submarine fighting against the Japanese. As the Captain, you make the decisions where to go, whether to run on the surface or submerged, and if the latter how deep; and if and when you find the enemy, how, when and if you will attack. You are in total command of your boat and your fate. Whether you win or lose, live or die, is in your hands alone. The subs and torpedoes, including their types and capabilities, are completely accurate and change as you move through the war years. The equipment aboard your boat is correct for the date of your patrols. This adds a great deal of realism to gameplay. You can play historical missions, actual wartime encounters. Two that stick in my mind are Bud Gruner's attack in USS Skate against the light cruiser Agano; and Red Ramage's wild and daring night strike in USS Parche against a well-defended Japanese convoy that earned him the Medal of Honor. Or, you can play in campaign mode and see if you are skilled enough to fight and think your way through the entire war and survive to V-J Day. It takes upwards of forty patrols to make it through the three and a half years of the Pacific War (which is more than three times as many war patrols as the Submarine Service's submariners made on average during World War II). Also, as the captain you have an additional stress, one taken from the Navy's wartime records. Fail to sink any ships on one patrol, and ComSubPac will rip you up one side and down the other. Turn in two zero runs, and you'll be sent ashore as unfit for command in combat. However, if you sink ships and carry out special missions successfully, your character will be decorated with medals ranging from a Letter of Commendation to the Medal of Honor, awarded by the criteria in use at the time of your patrol in game time. There is a time-compression feature that is useful for speeding up dull periods of patrolling, approaches and closing on on enemy ships that you can turn on. When you get close, you can either reset to real time or the game will drop you into real time. Time-compression can run as high as 1024 x realtime. So, if you think you have what it takes to command a submarine in combat against a skilled enemy who gives no quarter and expects none, this game is for you. You will learn a fair bit about the history of the Silent Service in World War II. However, I think you'll learn a lot more about yourself. So take command of your boat. The nation is counting on you to win the war. Good luck, and good hunting!Read full review
"Silent Hunter",The vary name provokes intrigue and suspence. This game has been reproduced in five plus versions since "Windows 95",each a more indepth version of it`s predessor."Silent Hunter" has certainly stood the test of time, with senerios that are always different and unpredictable, the situation is always differernt no matter how many times you play the same scenerio. So in effect, its always "New!".This is what keeps all who have ever played "Silent Hunter",eager for the next version myself included. As fantastic as this game has evolved,I find I never get board of playing this game in any of it`s versions.
Silent Hunter is the definitive World War 2 submarine game. It puts you in command of the U.S. submarines that challenged the Imperial Japanese Navy from the Philippine Islands to the Sea of Japan. You will conduct war patrols similar to those made in the Pacific Theater during the war. You will experience the problems this brave group of World War 2 submariners faced. Most importantly, this unique submarine simulation game will give you a keen appreciation of the contribution American submariners made in stopping and ultimately defeating Japanese aggression in the Pacific Theater.
Steep Panthers III, brigade operations, is a natural extension of the original series. It was fun to actually take charge of platoons of tanks, men, and guns to engage your opponents with. There is no other game like this on the market. Scenarios include large varieties from 1940-2000.
