Before Lucy became famous as a comedienne on her own TV series, she was a struggling dramatic actress in movies. This 1946 film noir is one of her best. She plays Kathleen, secretary to private detective Bradford Galt (Mark Stevens) who becomes the patsy for an art director Hardy Cathcart (Clifton Webb) out to kill his young wife's lover Anthony Jardine (Kurt Krueger). Hardy has hired Fred Foss(William Bendix) to kill Jardine in Galt's apartment. Jardine and Galt have a history because Jardine caused Galt to be sent to prison. So why is Lucy involved in all this? She becomes Galt's secretary as well as his girlfriend and helpmate in solving the crime. This movie is a complicated film noir, but it all works itself out in the end. You will especially enjoy our favorite redhead's involvement in all this. It is a nice ride but not one that you will want to watch over and over again. The movie reminds me a lot of "Laura," a more famous movie with a haunting song. Clifton Webb was also the villain in that movie.Read full review
This is a very entertaining movie in the film noir style.It's all about a private detective who is getting framed for a murder and he doesn't know who is is framing him. The story is a bit complicated so the viewer must pay close attention to the details. I recommend this movie to any, serious movie fan. The acting, directing, and production values are all excellent. The dialog is pure, Hollywood.
