I was looking for a book which could help me to learn Chinese characters. As a beginner I had hard times trying to remember numerous pictographs which didn't make any sense to a western mind.Until now! Thanks to this wonderful book "What's in a Chinese Character" I finally make a progress. Being a visual lerner I greatly appreciate the cartoons which are used to show how the symbols evolved into modern characters. The only drawback is tiny size of the characters given as examples of possible word combinations. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to read and write Chinese.
From the history and etymology of the characters to the cute cartoons-I’m thrilled with this purchase so far! My only suggestion-while I have my separate notebooks for practicing writing the characters; this book provides just a few lines. Perhaps a bit more practice space?
