With amazing graphics and a compelling story this game is almost Impossible not to love. You play as a prince who has been ousted from his Kingdom because of a military coup. You must gather together 108 different characters (all of which bring something to your follow) in order to build an army so that you can retake your homeland.

Many of the classic elements of JRPGs are apparent in Suikoden V but there are so many characters with actual motivations beyond just being good and bad guys. I'm only a few hours in to the game and I've really enjoyed the story, the voice acting is also pretty good which can really make or break some games for me. The combat is varied and engaging. The graphics are colorful and well done.

To tell the truth, I lost hope in ever playing a good Suikoden again, after Suikoden 4. Suikoden 1 and 2 were amazing games. Then came along 3, which wasn't bad, but I didn't get the Suikoden feeling with 3. I couldn't even finish playing it. I played till about 75% of the game , then just stopped. After that, I had high hopes for Suikoden 4. Rune of Punishment and all that. But sadly, it was such an average game with nothing to flaunt. It definitely lost the Suikoden feeling totally. So, when I heard about Suikoden 5, I didn't pay much attention to it. I was more interested in my other favourite RPG series such as Shadow Hearts and Final Fantasy. Man, was I in for a surprise!! Graphics: The graphics is this game is nothing short of amazing. It's such a huge improvement over Suikoden 4. And plus, the town and dungeons and everything feel like Suikoden 1 and 2 again, but muchhhh better. The character designs are spectacular, probably the best yet in any Suikoden. From the beginning, I was intrigued by the characters. Overall, the graphics in Suikoden won't be disappointing to anybody. It's beautiful and well-designed. Gameplay: We're back to Suikoden 1 and 2 again folks:) 6 characters in battle. Various formations. I'm so so glad they did this. I think they finally realized not to change anything that's not broken. They changed too much with Suikoden 3 and 4, instead of improving Suikoden 1 and 2 style. The gameplay in this game is very simple, in my opinion. But that's the beauty of it. Sound: Extremely breathtaking musics can be found throughout the game. I enjoyed every one of them. The battle musics, town musics, etc etc. They are all nice to hear. Overall: Suikoden fans or not, get this game now!! You won't regret it. RPGs like this don't come along all the time. This review is from the point of view of someone that played, and enjoyed Suikoden 1, 2 and 3. I decided to buy the game after hearing good things about the story and battles. First off the storyline, while decent, has an awful beginning. The pacing of the story is just terrible, the battles take minimal effort, and the "castle town" you're stuck wandering around is awful. Thankfully this all improves later, and you'll also start seeing a lot less cut scenes, which means less horrid voice acting as well. However, once it gets going you'll discover a political plot with all the depth and betrayal of the previous Suikodens. I don't like to spoil story details personally, but the plot follows the same basic formula as the first two Suikodens. Game play is probably the game's best feature, once it's done giving you uber allies that can't be killed at least. The original Suikoden 1 and 2 battle system (6 character party included) has been expanded with different formations, and allows you to use 3 runes on each character like Suikoden 3. This sounds great at first, until you realize the battle system wasn't originally designed for that at all, leading to old runes+combinations being incredibly cheap. Tactical combat seems a bit Dynasty Tactics 2 like. Certain units have advantages over others with the usual rock paper scissors system. These like the rest of the game, are incredibly easy, once you know what you're doing. The music isn't worth mentioning much, the games best music is old remixes from Suikoden 1. It isn't necessarily horrid music, that award goes to Suikoden 3, but it's not very good music either. Now onto graphics, the opening movie you see every time you start the game is pretty ugly compared to the very high quality anime scene in Suikoden 3 and doesn't have a catchy tune like Suikoden 1. The character animation is a very significant improvement to the herky jerky odd running in Suikoden 3 though. Characters move very naturally and have decent detail. Unfortunately the game shares the same washed out graphical look as suikoden 3, so don't expect too many vibrant colors aside from the MC's flamboyant clothes. In closing this is a solid RPG to buy with a fun, though too easy battle system, and has 108 different characters to collect. Replay value is hurt tremendously by the unskippable cutscenes though, I can't even imagine playing through that horrid intro again.Read full review
I have been a fan of the Suikoden series since Suikoden I was released in the United States. Each time one comes out, I get it as quickly as I can. Suikoden V has lived up to its predecessors. It is very visually rich and has interesting characters and plots. It is challenging yet not to the point of impossible. It has a moderately open storyline in enough places that you feel you get to actually explore the world in which the game takes place. The fishing mini-game is enjoyable. The only slightly frustrating thing about Suikoden V is how often it pauses for loading. It seems to be more often than any other game I've played. It isn't frustrating enough to keep me from playing the game though. If you liked any of the other Suikoden games or rpg type games, then I would recommend this one.
Very much in the spirit of the Final Fanasty series, this is a rpg (role play game) with turn based fighting. The graphics and story are excellent and the game is very involved. The negitives are: lots of talking, slow to get started, and lots of load screens. It isn't just Final Fantasy with a different title, there is much more to the game than fighting monsters. There are duels, wars, and land and sea fights. If you are willing to put in the time to get past the mundane tasks of running errands and talking to people, the game becomes very interesting. The outcome of the game depends on how many people you can recruit to your side. Your words and actions effect the game. You need to find the right approach to the different characters (there are 108 different characters to recruit). During the regular battles you control up to six at a time, abilties differ and combo attacks are possible (if the right people are fighting together). I won't take a lot of time in describing the story in depth, but here is a very brief summery. You begin as a prince running errands for the queen. Women are the only one allowed to rule the Queendom. After an uprising, the queen is likked and your little sister is being held againat her will. You need to recruit and army and rescue her (since she is now the queen). If you are interested in rpgs with in depth stories and varied action, you will enjoy this game and get your money's worth. If you are looking for something to sit down with for a couple of hours, then you won't care much for Suikoden V. The game takes several hours of play to get to the real action.Read full review
Okay, right from the I'll say it's not a perfect game like Radiata Stories. Heck, even Radiata Stories had it's share of flaws. The main thing I was glad about this game was the fact that there was no sailing like in S4. I was also glad to see that they went back to 6 vs 6 battles. Every game has it's share of flaws and Suikoden 5 is no different. The story is kinda-sorta the same (A boy fighting an evil madman) but it delivers. One thing I mostly disliked about S4 was the fact that all the characters were technically the same. Jeremy and Helmut wielded the same weapon. In here take a look at Belcoot and Dinn, they almost have the same weapon, but completly different attack styles. While the game is a little quick I personally packed at least a good 50-60 hours into this game. Item was in perfect condition...Couldnt ask for anything more. I really like rpgs and I am pleased to add another classic to the collection. However, the rpg in question at times suffers too much from the traditional rpg formula.. Also, this title also has the problem of suffering from being under the shadow of its predecessors...i.e....Suikoden 2 and 3...However, this game is still highly enjoyable as the story is presented in a very decent way... The main characters silent stoicism is eclipsed by the views and interactions of other characters...and the political climate of the game itself is reminded me of politicians in todays world. In essence Suikoden 5 is still a great game...it just seemed like it could have been a lot better.
After buying and suffering through the boredom that is suikoden 4, I was a little reluctant to play this game, but decided to try it out and I have to say im so happy i did! This RPG is so great, I love it! The fighting system is like the other suikoden games, which hasnt changed i think, the music is very pretty, and of course, the voice acting is very good too! Though we have to play with the silent character again, but it's still good. Lots of choices and outcomes! And the story line is great, full of surprises, betrayals, and a whole lot of drama. So if you're one of those people who like RPG games with a good story line and background, i say this is the one for you!
I used to own this game, back before the American recession and so, I had to have it again when jobs and money picked up for me. The reason that I adore the game is the characters. There are over 60 playable characters that you can get. Some of them are a challenging find, but well worth it once they have been found. If you wish for some advice, BUY this game and PLAY witht his party. 1. Prince (not removable) 2. Eresh 3. Lu 4. Nelis 5. Sharmista 6. Urda You will have a blast...
