This is a good printer for home or a small business that does not require lots of space. This printer is always dependable and reliable. Printing quality is good with a fresh toner cartridge kept in a dry location. You might get an occassional multi feed of sheets because of the printers configuration but I think that this is due to high humidity levels at various times that makes the pages stick together. I currently own 4 printers at home (2 are being used in separate rooms and 2 are kept as spares in case of repairs). My employer has approximately 20 of these units around the office and after 10-12 years, they are still working. I have purchased each of my printers on Ebay with less than 3,000 pages printed (anything more you are risking the chance that the most important part, the fuser, has already been overworked and will need replacing - good luck if you can find one plus the $100 cost for a printer technician to install it for you). Be careful when the printer is advertised with low pages printed or 17,000 pages with low monthly cycle. 17,000 pages of print is approximately 8-9 years of usage for an average print year (1,500 - 2,000 pages per individual) which is already a long time. You are expecting trouble at this level. Overall, this is a nice printer that will do a great job for less than $100. Also, do a print page number check when you buy a printer because several sellers will tell you that there are less han 5,000 pages printed, but in reality, there are over 171,000 pages printed. Buter Beware.Read full review
Great product for the price. I have 3 in use in my business. A friend of mine needed an inexpensive black and white priter that printed faster than a ink jet. Ordered it for him and he is totally happy. In the long run, ink cartridges are less expensive than the color cartriges in ink jets. If you purchase on make sure the HP cable comes with it. The cable connects the printer to a parallel printer port. If your computer doesn't have a parallel port you can either by a PCI card or a parallel to USB cable converter. Also, the earlier 1100's had a problem where multiple paper would feed at once. If you have this problem HP offer a free simple to install fix for it. Don't even have to open the printer to install it. All in all, a great buy for the right price.
It's a fairly good printer that can do all the basic printing stuff. It has a memory expansion port if one needs to do more complex printing. It also has an option scanner which can make this unit a rather affordable all in one and the scanner can operate independent of the computer. There is also external interface cards to allow USB as well as networking capabilities. Toner is fairly inexpensive for this unit at 18 to 25 dollars or you can use the HP OEM toner which is quite a bit more expensive. All in all it is a very good unit if you can get it at a good price.
The HP 1100 is a good solid monochrome Volkswagen Beetle of a laser printer that occupies a small footprint on the desk and can be had for a rather modest price. It helps if one is mechanically inclined when buying any used printer, but repair manuals and parts for all older HP products are readily available, and there are good user group resources to help you through any snags. In my particular case my $12 printer came without a toner cartridge or paper supports, so make sure when you buy that the paper supports come with the printer. You'll need them. Parts are readily available from the manufacturer but can be expensive, so it pays to shop around or buy a spare printer for parts. As it happened my low page count printer came with a bad fuser assembly, which costs $59 from the manufacturer and $7 on ebay. It took me about an hour and a half to change the fuser and no special tools are needed. If buying the HP 1100, ask to see a good copy of the test sheet which will give you the number of sheets of paper that have been through the printer and will tip you off to any repetitive defects. One can buy service manuals for these printers from Tradebit for a modest price and if you intend on tackling a repair they're absolutely mandatory. My $12 printer ended up costing me the better part of $100 by the time I was finished, but it should last a while, as these machines generally go a couple hundred thousand sheets before they're ready for the dumpster.Read full review
The 1100 was not one of HP's success stories. While the print quality is good, it has several problems. 1. It uses a non-standard cable. It uses a micro-Centronics connector, not the industry standard Centronics. These are expensive, hard to find, and frequently costing more than a used printer. 2. There is no USB port. It's parallel / printer port or nothing. 3. The paper takes one or two right-angle turns, depending on whether the deflector is set to deliver the print out the front or to the receiving tray. This makes the 1100 prone to jam, which it does frequently. It can be a bear to clear a jam between the cartridge and the front of the printer; a bar must be unscrewed and released to get at the jam. 4. 2 MB of memory is not enough for anything other than text printing. 5. The 1100 takes 100 pin EDO memory modules, which were not popular even when they were available. It only takes one module, maximum 16 MB. 6. If the copier is installed and the printer has less than 10 MB memory, pushing the "copy" button causes it to scan - pause - scan - pause, and eventually it prints. 7. The toner cartridge was only used in the 1100 and 2x00 series, making them more expensive than popular cartridges. If you can get one cheap with the printer cable, it is OK as a home printer. It's not suitable for even small office use. Typically it's cheaper to buy a used printer with a toner cartridge installed than it is to buy a replacement toner cartridge. That should say something about the quality and reliability of the 1100.Read full review
