I bought this system on ebay after thorough research of all the models in my budget. This is for my wife who is geographically challenged. It is easy to install and ready to go. The improved bracket keeps the unit mostly steady. The processor speed is very good and calculates routes and changes pretty fast. Easy to use and understand.Routing is accurate and the choices and options are great. Loaded with useful features.Calls out names for the routes. Smart detour and reroute choices are great. Now the Cons- 1.Sometimes the "shortest distance" choice is the better route than the "fastest route" choice,as the processor calculates roads with faster speeds and takes you on a longer route than necessary. It does not calculate like mapquest. For example on a particular route the fastest route was 22miles with the roads averaging 65mph.Takes 20.3mins to the destination, shortest distance was 11.5mi with average speed of 50mph and takes 13.8mins to the destination. 2. The maps and POI are a bit dated. The POI finder does a good job but indicates the POI in a 25meter range. 3.On highways it indicates direction of exit but will not tell you which exit if there are two ways to go in one exit.Example it says "exit on the right", now in this exit you have say Rt-1North and Rt-1South it will not tell you which one.But then I live in NY/NJ and nothing can be so precise here. Overall I give this unit a Buy rating, one of the best among peers.Read full review
The RoadMate 760 is no longer a current product. Used ones are selling for extremely reasonable prices (just slightly over $100, 1Q08 prices), making them a very good buy. It does exactly what it is supposed to do, letting you know exactly where you are, and exactly how to get to where you want to be. I've grown to depend upon it in my limousine business. I won't go through all of its specifications and options because you can find that elsewhere. I rate it good. I would have rated it excellent, only because of these few problem areas. None of these are show-stoppers, but just minor inconveniences: 1) Once in a great while, it will freeze up and none of the controls will work. It took me a long time to realize that this is a heat build-up problem, and it happens only in the winter and only when the GPS is close to the hot air vent (for side window defroster) on my cashboard. Moving it to a cooler spot eliminates this problem. 2) There are a number of minor S/W bugs, such as: a) scrolling down a menu with the menu bar doesn't work properly, and getting to the very last item on a menu is sometimes very difficult. b) sometimes when you cancel a route, it pops back up again and you have to cancel it a second time. c) when icons are close together on the map, its very difficult to touch the icon you really want and instead you accidentally get an adjacent one. d) when expanding the map with + keys, it will often forget its center point, and its orientation, and will rotate the map to some other nearby location and completely different compass orientation and you become temporarily disoriented. I consider these all minor problems, and 99% of the S/W was done right! 3) It only works on car 12V DC or house 120V AC. It can't be used when walking or biking or on a tour bus. 4) It's heavier than the current (but more expensive) models. 5) I've noticed a few of the brand new roads are missing from this unit, and some intersections have been redone. Magellan wants $100 to update the database. This is unreasonable. I've already licensed the database. $25 would be more reasonable. So I continue to use the original database and override its directions in these new areas, or look up those new addresses online before setting off.Read full review
Pros: Pre-loaded maps, easy to use, just take out of box, plug in, type in address or intersection and you are on your way. Voice is clear and tells you where to turn, how far and the street name. If you make a mistake, it re-calculates route to put you back on track. Unit can calculate the optimal route to multiple destinations and can re- calculate route, if you get stuck in traffic. Cons: Does not always give you the "best route." If you are not familiar with the area, route might take you through the seedier parts of town. Also, there have been a few times that it has taken my unit longer than usual to calculate a route, but eventually it does.
I was unsatisfied with another brand of navigation system that I own and saw the Magellan Roadmate 760 in a store. I liked how easy it seemed to be to operate and decided to give one a try. I obtained mine for a good price on Ebay and was able to successfully operate it the very first time I used it. I love the touch screen feature, and the voice is very clear compared to my former one and others I've heard. I would like to see two improvements. The first being the ability to cancel a program without having to turn off the unit and rebooting it. The second is I would like to hear a compass direction spoken when I'm being told to take an exit or onramp. Example: When traveling in New York, the unit said to take a right onto the New York Throughway. There were two rights; one for going north, and one for going south. I took the wrong one and, although it told me to reverse my direction, I was not able to do that until the next exit thirteen miles away.Read full review
The Magellan Roadmate 760 seems to have a nice multichannel GPS receiver but the software could be improved. I've used it in my employer's vehicle throughout Pennsylvania for several months. Every so often it will signal for a turn (on an open highway) and occasionally it is difficult to know which turn or exit it is alarming about. When I do make a wrong turn, it will recalculate with pretty good results within 10 seconds or so. The screen is easy to see, but honestly, when driving it is the audio prompts that I need. This unit provides fairly good sound (it "dings" when a turn is needed.) and it also has a few phrases it produces. On occasion I grab it to take in a work truck, and find no power socket in the vehicle. This is exactly when I think we should have bought the Garman units that use batteries in addition to 12 volts. The built in antenna frequently pops off. In fact the unit sometimes falls off the stalk connecting it to the windshield suction cup. Aside from these distractions it is suitable for most navigation needs. If you are caught in the valley between hilly areas and can't receive from at least 3 satellites, no external antenna will help you. External antennas are useful for overcast days and sparse tree cover.Read full review
I liked the fact that the GPS "speaks" the street names in addition to the distance until the next turn- even though the street names sometimes sound a bit garbled. The menu system is easy to use- you can figure out how to use it without reading the user's manual. However, you sometimes have to press a selection on the menu a few times or pretty hard before it registers. In addition, when the GPS is attached to the dashboard, it vibrates and bounces so that it appears that the GPS may fall down. Even though this is an older model, it is a great value for the money if your purpose is to just get from point A to point B.

No wreless signal required (unlike the phone apps) It's got a decent sized screen and the windshield mount adjusts to the right viewing angle without obstructing your vision of the road. It has great features too numerous to list here, so check out it's spec Dme for dime and 98.5% of the time..these usr friendly babies can't be beat.. I bought this Magellan Roadmate 760 to replace my Roadmate 700 which had been stolen. The 760 is plug'n'play - comes with a complete database already loaded so there's no fussing with cards or computers, just plug in the power, give it a few minutes to figure out where it is, then go. The main drawback with the older Roadmates is that they're somewhat clunky compared to the current generation of GPS receivers. The good news is that as with all electronics, prices keep coming down, thus eBay is a GREAT place to buy one. The clunkiness/heaviness makes the windshield mount problematic - I recommend an aftermarket dashboard weighted-base type mount; there are many types available. Did I mention my 700 was stolen? Best not to leave one in plain view on your dashboard - but they are programmable with a password, which I'm sure Darrell the Drug Addict who stole mine is having a good time trying to demonstrate to his local fence. Updated databases for the Roadmates are released every year or two and are reasonably priced; loading a new one requires a computer with a DVD ROM, a USB connection, a power source and a cradle, all of which are supplied by Magellan with the unit. Accessories such as these are readily available on eBay. It takes a couple of hours to refresh the unit's maps, but again it's intuitive and almost foolproof. Be aware that even freshly updated databases are about a year time late so don't expect to see the newest roads included, so it's best to always have a backup plan. Overall, the Magellan Roadmate 760 is a great value and I highly recommend it!Read full review
Takes very long time to orient itself via satellites. Seems to lag behind in directions. My original one worked great. Maybe because this hasent been used regularly it take like Niger to regulate itself. Hopefully it will get better.
