I have had the printer for over a year and it has been great with the usual up and down of a low cost printer. When anyone buy Epson Photo printer, it should be for photo printing ONLY and you won't be disappointed. Excellent Picture quality at a very, very slow speed :( Text printing is average at most, but legible at small font size. The down side is that the print head does get dirty or dry and you need to perform the printer self cleaning before using if you don't use the printer on a daily basis. If you do use it on a daily basis, you won't have any problem at all other than cleaning after installing a new set of ink cartridge (aftermarket ink). Yes, the printer does take in more than 1 sheet of paper sometimes, but it does not jam the printer for the most part. Overall, small problems for a great print results.Read full review
I wanted this particular Epson printer, because my last two printers were this exact printer. I’m familiar & comfortable with the Epson printers & have a newer model, xp-410, which isn’t new by todays standards, however, it is newer than my Epson Stylus 820. I use the Stylus 820 mainly for my old Apple Mac, which came loaded with apps ie: painting, drawing, data base, spreadsheet, word processing, etc. The Stylus prints all my forms, drawings, fliers, etc., perfectly & was easy to install, as I’m technologically challenged! My Epson xp is used for my newer Mac mini , which is very efficient, but printing is rare, to none.

I did had Epson printers before and I am familiar with them. Those I had are Epson stylus photo 777 and Epson stylus photo 820 and did last me at least 2 years each. I was able to find a secondary inks on the internet below $10.00 for color and for blank ink and was OK with me. I still have the Epson stylus photo 820 but has a problem and I can not fix it even I spoke with Epson manufacturer. You better buy a new one or similar from elsewhere other than trying to fix that one you have. My advice to all. If you do much printing, specially color do not get to those printers that using 3-5 different colors. Will be on or above $50.00 minimum a month for your printings. Thank you. Dimitris
This is a very good printer for printing professional quality photos. Because it has been designed for this purpose, it is not as good for everyday text printing. As for the issues mentioned in other reviews concerning the ink cartridges, I have this to say: ALL PROFESSIONAL QUALITY PHOTO PRINTERS USE A GOOD AMOUNT OF INK. That is how the images come out seamless and unpixelated. You might find that a ferrari is not the best car for running everyday errands but I don't see people complaining about how much gas a ferrari uses and how they don't run well in stop and go traffic! This is a PHOTO printer, and a good one.
The printer is great and does what was expected. I bought it to replace one just like it that quit working. The only bad thing about Epson printers are that unless you use them on a regular basis the ink has a tendency to dry in the print heads. Then to clean the print heads you use a lot of the ink that you would normally use to be printing pictures, etc. Even printing in black and white does not keep the remaining color print heads clean. You must print something in color at least once a week, even if it is only the nozzle check patterns, to keep the heads functioning properly. The color on the pictures printed on this printer are great, and the speed isn't too bad for high resolution color printing. Even my very old and slow Epson has a print quality that puts my HP, Cannon, and Lexmark printers to shame. Epson, however has made it difficult to buy anything but Epson cartridges, because of the chip on each print cartridge. However, if you plan ahead, and have a supply of generic cartridges on hand, you can cut your ink expenses in half. You can also buy a chip resetter which lets you refill your ink cartridges. Be sure to buy the proper ink to use in the cartridges and avoid the one type fits all inks.Read full review
Great Printer, Easy To Use, Easy To Set Up. The only problem I have ran into, if you have too much paper in the feeder, it gets stuck. 2 times now, the paper feeder has broken on me. But I keep re-purchasing it b/c it is so easy to use. It has nice clarity.
This is probably the 3rd 820 I've purchased. There is so much flexibility as to the final results that you can suit any taste and eye. Even border-free prints are amazing. I've seen it said this is not a good machine for plain black text but I've printed hundreds of pages like resumes and long letters without issue. It would be a waste to use this printer only for this purpose. Also, you can buy generic ink at printpal.com at a fraction of the Epson price and still achieve superior results. Paper, however, is another matter and only good quality should be used to avoid pixelation. The only drawback I can find with the 820 is that it requires a lot of head cleaning which wastes ink. This is normally after a prolonged period of inactivity but the website I mentioned earlier now sells a head cleaning cartridge which I just bought. You will absolutely get photographs that you will be proud to frame.Read full review
Speaking to an Epson Representative, I was quite happy to find out that Epson considers the Stylus 820 Photo Printer to be well ahead of its time. Since its creation, Epson has utilized the same format for all of its fine Phot printers. Although the 820 has it limitations, is has been one of the most sought after Photo printers in Epson History. Don't be fooled by its price, this little printer packs a fine resolution that to the normal eye can be compared with printers costing more then twice as much. The only thing poor about this printer is its inability to print black text. If you are looking for an everyday printer to print your exam papers, this is not the machine for you, infact it is Poor at best printing text. Use this as your stand alone Color Photo printer.
Epson DOES NOT NOTIFY a customer that the manufacturer have foreseen the harmful measures to prevent printer from use in the case when customer tries to reduce his operating expenses. I found that a special counter is embedded in the hardware to make the printer unusable in the case of excessive cleaning, i.e. when the cheap refilled cartridges are used. The printing heads are made irreplaceable for the same purpose. The cartridges themselves also have the chip and the counter preventing them from use in the case of refilling efforts. I bought Epson Stylus photo 820 because I hoped that it had a capability to convert negative film to positive software images. No, it had not, but it could print a picture from the film - very long time for one picture.
It set up easy and prints awesome!
