In 1999 I first bought this game for my children. I wound up playing more than they did, however it did teach them strategy and geography while being entertaining at the same time. This game offers scenarios from Rome and WWII that helped in this regard. The games graphics were moderate even in 1996 when it came out but they didn't need to be as much as a shooter would. There are timed games available with this game also that will teach time management. Civ 3 4 and 5 are far more advanced visually but still lack the portability of Civ 2. Civ 2 will easily fit completely, with all the graphics and sounds, into any laptop hard drive with basic memory and still be playable. You won't even have to have the disk to play. Versus newer games this one gets a 3 star rating. But for comparable games available at the time it carries a 5 star rating. The graphics could have been better even then, but I believe it would have increased the memory requirements so that the game's versatility would have made it less portable.Read full review
Simply my favorite game. Most games are either easy to begin playing but lacking depth, or very challenging but very difficult to begin playing at an acceptable level. Civ is the odd exception, It is very simple to begin (an easy level with a good tutorial), and can get very difficult, while constantly revealing new subtleties in gameplay. The ways you can play it also allow you to tailor the game to your personality - world domination vc. diplomacy vs. space exploration. The same is true of the technologies you can build - armies, libraries, banks, etc. I have played, and continue to play the later versions, which have signigicantly better graphics, but this is still a great game. One plus is that the entire game can be loaded onto your hard disk, so you don't need the CD in a drive to tun it. My wife has tried each later version, and always gone back to Civ II. There are also a number of add-on packs to increase the versatility further - you can re-fight World War II or an alien invasion.Read full review
Well, what can be said about Civilization II? Everything! It is simply awesome! Of course, it is for folks that like strategy games (i.e.--a first person shooter lover should not buy this game!-lol). A top gaming website rated this game as 9.2 out of 10. The great thing about this game is that it was made in 2000, but it can be run on older systems, dating back to Windows 95. And there are so many ways to win! It is simple to use, and the tutorial pop-up windows throughout the game help you advance further in the game. GAMERS BEWARD: It is a truly addicting game! Of course-thats what we want! This game is a 5-star game--no doubt about it!
Despite the description for the item saying it worked with my version of Windows, it does not. It really needs an old machine and this disk is inconsistent with my Windows computer. So it was a total loss. That said, the purchase was quite inexpensive, was promptly shipped to me and let's not forget it's over 20 years old. All in all, the compatibility issue is regretful but completely understandable.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
Honestly it is one of the best games I have ever played. It is one of those games that you get addicted to for a while, lose some interest, come back to it in a few months and get addicted again. Gameplay is realtively simple and you can probably buy the game for under 10 dollars today. Graphics aren't great but gameplay is awesome.
