Fever Pitch got a lot of heat when it came out because of the involvment of the Re Sox in it - many considered it to be an unholy mockery of the Red Sox 2004 World Series championship. But the movie wasn't meant to be a sports film - its a date movie. Its cute and its funny - and thats exactly what its meant to be. Jimmy Fallon is hilariously odd and uncomfortable as a die hard red sox fan trying to balance his commitment to his team and his new girlfriend (played by Drew Barrymore). I personally find Drew Barrymore irritating and a sub-par actress, but she is mostly fine in this role. The movie has something for everyone and its an enjoyable 90 minutes. My guess is that this movie wouldn't work without Jimmy Fallon - who really makes it special and brings to life some of the oddball humor the Farley brothers are known for.Read full review
How could this movie possibly be so bad? It's the Farrelly brothers, and they made Dumb and Dumber, AND they can even make a movie about the special Olympics funny and appropriate, too. And even if the movie sucks, Drew Barrymore is SO CUTE that I could just watch her do dishes for 90 minutes and be entertained. Well, I was wrong on both counts. This is honestly one of the worst piles of awful movie ever made. It fails as a romantic comedy because it fails at both romance and comedy. The only reason one would like this movie is if they are die hard Red Sox fans and get turned on by just seeing their team on the big screen. The only reason I gave it a rating of two instead of one is because the soundtrack had Dropkick Murphys. I have to give credit where credit is due.
My husband rented this movie once, and I was sold and had to have it! I love baseball (not just specifically the Sox), Jimmy Fallon was hilarious, and I think this might just be Drew Barrymore's best. (Excellent date movie) side note: if you want to watch "the making of Fever Pitch" on this disc, this just made me love it that much more. It was quite ironic how the SOX had been on an incredibly long stretch of not making it to the World Series, and the original written ending was to follow that streak. Miraculously they happened to get to the series at the same time the movie was being filmed, and quickly the ending had to be re-written and they had to do some fancy footwork to get there to film it and arrange to be "part of it - on the field" at the crowning moment!. GO SOX!
This is not the worst movie I have ever seen, but it sure isn't the best. Ben(played by Jimmy Fallon) is a very dedicated Red Sox fan. He puts them above everything else in his life. He starts dating Lindsey(Played by Drew Barrymore)and after a while it starts bothering her that she is the second priority in his life. They really could have made this funnier by making her play games or something to keep him from the games. Not that that would have been funny in real life, but hey this is the movies. It is a little dry and lacks a lot of humor.
The original version of this movie was finished before the season ended and had the Red Sox losing the pennant, that's why the end of the movie ended so abruptly. The final scene showing them running onto the field when the Red Sox won the World Series was done with the permission of the Cardinals and the fans were not thrilled with it happening. The Cardinals also went outside and called all the Red Sox fans without tickets in to watch the final innings when it looked like the Red Sox where going to win.A real class act by the Cardinals.
