This book is an unusual and invaluable collection of thousands of quality copyright-free clip art images. The images were taken from the rare 1900 edition of the American Type Founders Cut Book, a catalog for printers. The American Type Founders were photoengravers who made metal relief plates for letterpress printing. Plates were used primarily for reproducing illustrations and were called cuts. I love the book and have used some of the clip art images in my work. It is full of all kinds of vintage high-quality black and white images including many alphabet designs, decorative elements, old signage, objects, people and animals. These clip art images are very old and very interesting. The only thing I dislike about the book is that one has to lay it on a flatbed scanner and scan images onto hard drive. This poses some problems in that the book is large, and so you will not be able to get all the images on a page and those closer to the middle and edges will not scan properly. I bought book because I am interested in the Vintage artwork from Victorian times to Edwardian. I design mouse pads, cards, prints clothing, quilt and pillow tops, etc. and cater to a number of people who love the classic vintage artwork. This book is amazing when one looks at the very detailed images and realizes that these were all hand-engraved and not created with a high-end computer and software. It is a credit to any graphic artist's library of clip art--a look at how difficult it used to be to produce quality graphic artwork! The book is also an asset for anyone looking for rare decorative elements to add to their digital artwork. I FOUND IT ON EBAY!!!!!!!Read full review
This book proclaims it contains thousands of copyright-free images but then states on an inside page that none can be copied or reproduced in any manner because all rights are reserved. So what good is it? I bought it with the intention of using some images in a book I'm writing, but now I have no use for it. What am I supposed to do, just look at the pictures? Apparently, that is allowed. When you buy a clip art book from Dover publications, you are allowed to copy and use ten images per project.
