This is a classic for some of us. I've been looking for this hard to find movie for awhile now and I was glad I thought to look on ebay. The director's cut is especially great because I got background on the film and some of the inspirations and an understanding of the making of it as well as the phenomenon that came from it. Some of the actors got their start in this movie or it was a catalyst in their career. It's great to see their interviews looking back 27 years. I've seen several in other roles since. Although this is an older, low budet movie, this movie has stuck with me over the years. The only disappointing part is that the effects that the directors put in changing from scene to scene is different from the screen version I saw and make it more comic-like,as was apparently originally intended.I appreciate the directors cut more after watching the bonus footage.Read full review
For a movie that old (1979), it sure is a masterpiece! The main plot, even tough it's pretty basic, is quite original and contains enough twists to keep anyone wondering where all this is going to lead. The actors are OK, but actually I don't see how they could have been better, because this is an action oriented movie after all! The best part is the originality of the diffent gang's costumes. Sure, most of them look kind of "out of this world", but that's what makes them so cool. The only flaw was the sound quality. The movie sure sounds like it was made a while ago (which seems inevitable!). But all the rest more than makes up for that. For those who played the game, you'll feel right at home from the very beginning of the movie since most of the dialog from the game was actually taken straight from the movie. That's a pretty good thing and I must say I was amazed to see how the game's second half was exactly like the movie. It sure was interesting to see the real actors and everything. Finally, I must say I loved that movie a lot, but I also admit I wouldn't have watched it had I not played the game before (even if I think it can still be enjoyed by people who haven't played it!)! But I actually liked it so much that I think it'd be a neat idea to make a "prequel" that covers the first half of the game, explaining how The Warriors got together.Read full review
I saw this film around 1979 and never forgot it....lately, getting the opportunity for the director's cut, I jumped on it....no regrets. I not only enjoyed the film again but the extras that came with it (interviews, etc.) were really interesting to me.

I've always been a HUGE fan of the film THE WARRIORS! Ever since seeing it at my local drive-in back in the day of the films original release-1979.I had heard that Walter Hill had re-worked the film,THE WARRIORS,the way HE originally intended for the film to be shown.Couldn't wait to see what was left out of the original version of the AMAZING film classic! I found the directors cut on DVD sometime back at a local flea market.Paid very little for it.Three or four dollars i believe.Couldn't wait to watch it when i got home! I loved the original theatrical release of THE WARRIORS! But,seeing this directors cut,i had wished Walter Hill had left the film the way it was originally shown in theatres. The directors cut is too cartoony! Almost like a comic book, each segment turning like a page from a comic book.Live action turns into still action-animated.It kind of takes away from the fast pace of this film.Perfection should ALWAYS be left alone. If it ain't broke,DON'T fix it! Walter Hill is one of the most gifted directors in Hollywood! He's been around for years, and knows what he's doing.But,Mr.Hill,you must know how much of a cult following your film,THE WARRIORS has and how beloved this film is to its fans.ANY film as well made as this one, should have been left ALONE! If you want to buy this film, buy the original theatrical version of this film.If you're curious about the directors cut, rent it first!Read full review
When Vcr's were front loading back in the late 70's this was one of the first tapes I ever bought. There was just something about this movie. Perhaps it was growing up in an area with gangs as a kid, or perhaps it was the idea of testing yourself against the best of the other gangs. Perhaps its the "brotherhood" shared against the odds and danger. Or then again, all of the action through-out the movie certainly doesnt hurt any !! That and the rather excellent sound track through the movie. And of course, this has what my original tape never did. Alot of insight with the actors and directors. There is quite a few minutes of all of them talking about making the movie and many different things that played into it, that its taken me 26 years to learn. Whats the movie about ?? In short, one of the biggest gangs in New York issues an invitation to all of the gangs to come to a meeting. Nine members from each group and no weapons. They get to the meeting, and before the big gang leader (Cirrus) can lay his plan out, he is shot and killed. In the confusion that results as 100's of gang members try to escape and the police decend into the park where the meeting is held; a gang member accuses a member of the Warriors of shooting Cirrus. The rest of the movie is about the Warriors trying to get back to Coney Island (their turf) alive while all the other gangs in New York are looking to kill them. The end of the movie culminates with a clash between the Warriors and the gang that wrongly accused them at the beggining of the movie. Definately not for kids, and pretty strong for teenagers. Unless of course mom and dad are going to watch it with them and comment. Or perhaps preview this movie before letting the kids watch would be my suggestion. Many, many adult themes are in this one. For those of you that read, the book covers several things that the movie doesnt, such as the whole amusement area scene at the subway just before the Warriors are united. If you enjoy reading and want an additional insight into this movie, the book is NOT a waste of time. This movie has that cast of unknowns that can really draw you in, although I think one or two in the movie are stars before they were stars. Certainly one or two of them made it out of this to do other work. Hope this review helps. For the most part, this is an excellent movie, and I highly reccommend it.Read full review
This is just about what you'd expect in a gang-type movie... but with a serious twist. There are so many street gangs in NYC, that the leader of the largest decides that unification could control the entire city. He organizes a huge no-weapons-allowed gathering in Central Park with delegates from the bigger recognized gangs, in hopes of rallying them to unify under a central leader. It's going perfectly, when the leader of a smaller faction shoots and kills the leader. Between the cops suddenly appearing in force and the gangs running everywhere to avoid arrest, the killer fingers one of the 'Warrior' memebers as the shooter. Now the Warriors (lead by Michael Beck, of Xanadu fame) must make their way back to Coney Island, up agaist more than the proverbial wall... every gang is out for vengence, and blood. With the help of a radio DJ (Lynn Thigpen), the city's gangs are kept informed of their progress. Unaware of this, the Warriors stroll home, meeting some of the unsavory elements on the way. After a few conflicts, they soon learn that they've been sold out for something they didn't do and it's a race for their lives! A modern day epic that will keep you on the edge of your seats; and it was directed in a way that made it believable enough to happen today. To me it's on it's way to cult status... just as popular as the Rocky Horror Picture Show.Read full review
This is the 2005 re-release of the 1979 Walter Hill classic - the Warriors. In brief the film deals with all of New York's gangs meeting together for the first time. Each gang in the city has sent representatives to discuss basically taking over the city. The leader of the largest gang, and the organizer of the meeting,is killed and the Warriors, a gang from Coney Island, is blamed. The Warriors now have to fight their way back to Coney Island. Standing in their way is every gang in New York City. While the plot is typical the movie is anything but. Walter Hill brought an almost comic book like feel to the film incorporating gaudily dressed villains, incredible fight scenes, and riveting music including the Eagles classic - "In the City". The acting is solid, the action sequences are fantastic, and the soundtrack is great. It's a classic 1970 /80's action movie and the new release has lots of quality extras including an Introduction by Walter Hill and some interesting featurettes and interviews with the original actors. If you liked the original movie, you'll love the Ultimate Director's Cut.Read full review
Found and decided to buy the movie because of MTV's hit dance competition show. "America's Best Dance Crew" presented by Randy Jackson. The part where a person is saying outloud; "no more competing against each other ... can you dig it!!" http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_hJ_g1oTd0 As comparing today's movies, plots, and graphics. Theres no comparison, but the story line giving that it was made in the 1970s, is quite impressive. Very entertaining as you see the different types of gangs that were made and how they all carried themselves is quite interesting. As they are suppose to be scary and intimidating, some gangs were quite funny looking. If you like to watch "classical action movies" this one is for you, but don't expect it to be as action packed as "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", "Mission Impossible", etc. Much Mahalos for reading my review -DRead full review
Walter Hill revisits his 1979 cult classic in this 2005 director's cut DVD centering on a Coney Island gang trying to make it back to their home turf after being framed for the murder of a gang leader. The comic book style panels perfectly captures the mood and style of the film, but would turn off long-time fans. In a way, this wasn't a complete distraction after repeated viewings. James Remar and David Patrick Kelly's performances are a prime example of awesomenes in the roles of Ajax and Luther. Topping all off, Lynne Thigpen's narration and the soundtrack is very intoxicatinly pure to the finest. It is truly Hill's modern masterpiece in cult filmdom. Every image, every moment, and every line will stay within the viewer forever.
The Warriors is a classic cult movie that kinda draws you in to the movies sub-culture style. Gangs in NY...what a shock...not like this...something seems surreal. You are watching the movie, but somehow can picture yourself running and fighting for you life with the Warriors. I watched this movie really late one night and got hooked. Movies are not made like this anymore; nothing fancy, just lots of raw style acting. At times, the acting seems rushed and very primitive, but kinda refreshing in a sense. The story line has potential to be very deep and could have a sequeal, but dose not deliver. It just kinda one of those movies you love or just think is awful. After watching The Warriors the questions is "Can you dig it? Give yourself a chance to "bop" with the gangs of NY. john-IllinoisRead full review
