At the height of fascist repression in the 1960s, Sanchez was arrested and convicted of theft. He was sentenced to an absurd lifetime sentence, but managed to escape from prison. After this initial getaway, Sanchez begins a career as a righteous thief, becoming known as "El Lute," the Robin Hood of Spain, constantly thwarting the police and speaking out against the dictatorial Franco. The true story of this folk hero is presented in Vicente Aranda's (LOVERS) epic film, which captures the cultural climate of 1960s Spain while remaining an entertaining combination of historical drama and crime caper.
